Hank Johnson's Book Review of I Am America (And So Can You!)
Stephen Colbert's I Am America (And So Can You!) was released three years ago, in 2007, and it put Stephen Colbert on the map as a professional comedian and made him a household name. Today he could be considered one of the funniest and most unique comedians ever. His humor is offbeat and hilarious, and he is admired by many.
His book will be an instant hit among diehard Colbert fans, as every sentence is pure Colbert. It's amazing how deep fake opinions can be. The book spreads across many different topics, such as Sports, Religion, and the American family. His opinions can go on, and even get a bit boring, but this is a minor complaint compared to the genius of his writing.
The fact that the book does not bash any current political figures is good and bad, as you feel that the book could have contained more in the area of Colbert's expertise, but it also increases the timelessness of the book.
The best parts of the book are the parts on The American Family, the Media, and the American classes. I thought that some of the parts of the book could have been more thoughtful and funny and way longer than they were. This is an issue that many will not notice, but some Colbert fans may even be disappointed with these sections.
For any of you who have seen his show, the humor is exactly the same. At the beginning of the book, Colbert states that he did not in fact write the book, but "screamed it into a microphone in a fit of rage." Colbert seems to be the bad stereotype of an all-American maverick. But this is exactly his humor. I have met some who do not "get" the humor of The Colbert Roport, so if you are one of those people, this book is not for you.
So, the book will be good for some and not that good for others. But before I end the review, I want to ask a question. Have you ever laughed out loud several times while reading a book? If you haven't, and you're a fan of Colbert's, then this is the one.
