Book Reviews of I Am LegendBook Review: Not just great horror. Summary: 5 StarsMatheson's book stands head and shoulders above most horror/SF novels. It may not be action packed, but the superb prose is a joy in itself. The depiction of Neville's isolated world and his increasingly ascetic emotional state are fascinating studies of masculinity and loneliness. In this sense I Am Legend is possible one of the most underrated works of American literature from the last 50 years. It doesn't have big ideas in the traditional SF sense but it is ultimately tragic, personal and remarkably uplifting.
Book Review: forget all other vampire novels Summary: 5 StarsThis book is hardly a fast moving one ... it has some well paced action in it but mostly follows three years of the main character, but even so you stay gripped throughout. It gets you inside Robert Neville's head and you find yourself fitting exactly into the bizarre situation. And it deals with the 'ridiculous' idea of vampires with a logic that is kinda hard to argue with! I strongly recommend this book, it will give you a new look on the many bland vampire stories ... such a fresh look at the whole idea ... i cant believe it was written in 1954! 8)
Book Review: A Unique Piece of Writing Summary: 4 StarsAlthough it is not a fast-paced novel, it is hard to put down. The final line of the novel justifies the entire book and makes reading it worthwhile. A thought-provoking story. Classic!
Book Review: Scarry and compassionate Summary: 5 StarsAfter losing his family to the "plague" Neville has to fend off vampires from his doorstep as he is the one only human left..or is he? WOW! I just could not put this one down! The amazing feeling of empathy you feel for Neville is overwhelming. A complelling and scarry book that is as exciting as it is extraordinary.
Book Review: Totally superb ending! Summary: 5 StarsThis book is such a grabber, I read it in one day! It has an excellent premise (one man remains alive amongst a world full of vampires) and a brilliant main character in Robert Neville. He is so well written that you root for him the whole way through until the absolutely excellent ending. His adventures and thoughts and reactions seem so human, and there is a surprising amount of humour in it, although its black. If you are wondering what the slightly bizarre title means, all is revealed in the very last line! I hear they have been making noises about filming this soon, with either Arnold Schwarzeneggar or Kurt Russell. I think it will be very hard to film this book, but if they must they will need a very good actor for the role of Robert Neville. May I suggest Russell Crowe?
