Book Reviews of I Am Legend

Book Review: Greatest Vampire Story Since Dracula
Summary: 5 Stars

What can I say about a truly thrilling and intriguing book? Expertly written by Richard Matheson - he hardly wastes ones word - it conjures up a nightmare vision of a hellish world where the living envy the dead. The heroic Richard Neville struggles with his routine and the boredom and of course the endless army of bloodsuckers out to get him. By day he is a fearless vampire killer but by night the hunter becomes the hunted as he sits in his fortress waiting for daylight. One of the best books I have ever read. And I don't say that lightly.

Book Review: Very Interesting Book, but the ending let the Book down.
Summary: 3 Stars

I bought this Book while on my lunch break and was ultimately impressed with it. You can emphasise what it would feel like to be alone in the World and how you would begin to go mad. However, I did feel there was certain things that let the book down. You never get a real sense of when the whole world became Vampires. He is alone from the beginning and he does have some flashbacks. But generally the change to the population happened and we begin with the after affects. I also felt the ending was a bit poor. I dont want to spoil it for any potential new readers but I felt the ending was rushed and unworthy of the majority of the Book. It is a good addition to my Book shelf though.

Book Review: Genius!
Summary: 5 Stars

Prior to reading I Am Legend, I had never read any other 'vampire' novels. This is the 2nd book in the SF Masterworks series, and once you read it, you know why. The story is reminiscent to John Wyndham's Day Of The Triffids in the fact that it's a 'one man against the world' story. It is based around the daily life of Robert Neville - the last normal human being left on Earth - everyone else being blood hungry vampires, who are all rather keen to get hold Neville and suck him dry.
You find yourself greatly empathising with Neville as he goes about his daily routine of venturing out of his heavily fortified house until sunset, to try and dispose of his antagonizers in a swift and grizzly manner. By night he remains sheltered, drinking himself stupid with whisky (the glasses of which always end up rather comically smashed against a wall).
The book more than anything, explores Neville's sanity as he endures the endless daily battering of his house and mind against his innumerable foe. The book flows from beginning to end, and regardless of your usual choice of book, I'm confident that I Am Legend would be enjoyed by all.

Book Review: A very different vampire novel
Summary: 4 Stars

What struck me as particularly interesting when I first saw this book was that it was part of the SF Masterworks series. The scientific approach to the old idea of the vampire puts a new light on what can be an old and tired idea in modern literature. Mixed with Neville's new status, revealed at the very end, and the emotional roller-coaster his fate puts him on, it brings this novel to the fore.

I recommend it to anyone, especially those tired of Anne Rice vampires.

Book Review: AWESOME POWER OF LEGEND
Summary: 5 Stars

AN absolute masterpiece. Without which there would be no Stephen King, Night of the living Dead, Near Dark, Ultra Violet et al.
Visionary writing rooted in the struggles of the human heart against loneliness, subjectivity of good and evil and the ethics of masculinity.
Fantastically Tense. Paranoid beyond belief. A narrative to die for reflecting cold war paranoia and sexual repression (Forget Anne Rice!).
Matheson writes an killer Vampire novel that makes you think hard "What would would I do?". Don't give in to despair, BUY IT NOW!
