Book Reviews of I, Claudius : From the Autobiography of Tiberius Claudius, Born 10 B.C., Murdered and Deified A.D. 54 (Vintage International)

Book Review: Historical Dynamite
Summary: 5 Stars

If you look for intrigue, murder and mystery in a book then look no further than I Claudius. This book can sometimes be a little hard going, however it is more than worth the effort. This novel brings Roman culture and it's people alive, laying bare their relationships, achievements, faults, aspirations and on occasion their madness. I would recommend this book to anyone, take the time and try something different. Claudius speaks loud and clear just as prophesy once decreed.

Book Review: Dynasty for Real
Summary: 5 Stars

there's alot of blood and gore, lust and greed, power and murder in this; and as it's based on fact, it's very revealing on what the Roman Empire's leading figures got up to in the decline of the empire. From Augustus to Claudius, the book unfolds a gruesome history, as an "auto-biography" of Claudius. Great stuff.

Book Review: An Intense, claustrophobic work of fiction
Summary: 5 Stars

this book was not at all what i was expecting. Half way through I felt that it was just a plodding narrative, from a badly chosen viewpoint of Claudius, who had little to do with the events that he was narrating. By the end it was clear that Robert Graves has a complete mastery of where he wanted this novel to go. The gradual decline of an already corrupt monarchy into sheer insanity, culminating in the reign of Caligula and the (bizarre) crowning of Claudius. If you read this book be prepared for the detail, and the very numerous different accounts of betrayal, corruption etc....the sheer number of different events and names can be confusing, but this is a very worthwhile novel.

Book Review: This really is compelling reading
Summary: 5 Stars

I, Claudius by Robert Graves really is what they say it is, the best historical novel of our time. The brutal reality of power politics is splendidly portrayed by Graves against the rich and inspiring backdrop of ancient Rome. The story is told from the perspective of a nobly born, but disadvantaged spectator who stands by as those around him destroy each other until, inevitably, he is drawn into the role of participant in the glorious game that was Roman politics.

An excellent read, you won't be able to put it down.

Book Review: Interesting, exciting...
Summary: 4 Stars

This historical book, in the style of an autobiography, is basically extremely interesting. The actions and events described seem incredible until you realise that Robert Graves did indeed base this book's content on a wide range of historical sources describing the actual events of the Roman Empire, with not one character being 'made up' by the author.

The style is engaging with the use of propheshy and the sense of climax making the book very exciting. It's hard to put down once you've dipped into the glorious but cruel world that's described by Graves.
