Book Reviews of I, Elizabeth: A NovelBook Review: A good read Summary: 4 Stars
I love historical fiction, and this was a good read. However, I agree with other reviewers that you really need to be somewhat familiar with Elizabethan history to follow all the characters and events in this book. I also thought it focused a little too heavily on her love interests -- there was more to Elizabeth than that!
Book Review: A let-down Summary: 1 Stars
When I picked up I, Elizabeth, I was excited to have found a book that would present Queen Elizabeth's entire life. From the start I was annoyed with the weak and lust-led protrayal of Elizabeth. In the entire book, there were barely a handful of likeable characters, and Elizabeth was not one of them. Characters were never well developed and hardly ever memorable. The writing style was drawn out and boring. The plot was simply the same conflict over and over, with little variation other than a few names. The only thing that saved the book from being a complete failure was the amazing history it was based on, and the incredible amount of research put into it. In the end, it was still very disappointing.
Book Review: A story that could use a pick-me-up Summary: 3 Stars
As I read this book, I was compairing it to the only Tudor book or book placed during that period of time that I had read so far- The Other Boelyn Girl. The Boelyn Girl book was one of the best books I've read- ever. I thoroughly enjoyed it. This book on the other hand was very dry. Very dry. I was disappointed when reading this book, at several stages I had to urge myself to "plug along". It was not for total waste, the book did have some shining points. I guess it lacked most of the suspense and mystery that The Boelyn Girl had. And certainly I agree with the other reviewer that the only character that we really got to know, (her thoughts) was Elizabeth herself. It might have been helpful to get more insight on others. The book was very detailed and I give the author a huge thanks for printing in the back a glossary of "cast members". It came in handy, especially when one person could be and was called 4 different names, which made it hard to keep things straight. I know this book was fiction, but less fiction than the Boelyn Girl, which could be what made it a little less exciting to read. So, I guess that's a plus and a minus in it's own way. If you are interested in Elizabeth, I would still recommend this book, but also with the warning that it's not fast paced. In it's own right it is worth the time to someone who's hobby is learning about this era.
Book Review: An unforgettable book Summary: 5 Stars
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The queen's inner struggles with being a ruler yet a woman was described throughout the book. It was hard to put down and I was sorry when it ended. I'm looking forward to reading her other books.
Book Review: Beautifully written, could not put it down. Summary: 5 Stars
As I big fan of Philippa Gregory books, I have been searching for a comparable author of all things Tudor and I believe Rosalind Miles has surpassed Gregory in this book. Stunning visualisations of the era and great character depth have combined to make this book one of my new favourites that I know I will read over and over. Highly recommended.
