Book Reviews of I Love You Like Crazy Cakes

Book Review: Good but not great
Summary: 3 Stars

Like most people who purchase this book, I'm an adoptive parent of a baby from China.

I thought this book was good, and I'm glad I purchased it, but I was hoping for more. It does tell the typical China adoption story that most of us go through, and it does so in a way that a child can uderstand. So, from a purely education point of view, it does the trick. However, it was not as warm and fuzzy as I was hoping for.

I also purchased "Shaoey and Dot : Bug Meets Bundle". This is the story of a Chinese girl's adoption through the eyes of a ladybug. I thought this one was 5 stars - so much cuter, even more kid-friendly, and it actually brought tears to my eyes the first time I read it to my daughter.

Book Review: You found it! This is the book you'll want to buy :)
Summary: 5 Stars

Absolutely beautiful book about adoption. A wonderful book for any adoptive family.

Note: Almost all adoption books include a mother and father. This book is about a single mom adopting from China. Couples who adopt can easily adapt the story to their own situation when reading it to their children. Single adopters will be moved and grateful to finally find such a perfect, wonderful story about their family's experience.

Also available as a board book. And if you like this book and are a working mother you will love "When Mama Comes Home Tonight", also illustrated by Jane Dyer.

Book Review: I love, I Love You Like Crazy Cakes
Summary: 5 Stars

We received this book as a gift before the adoption of our daughter from China. The story of a Mother's journey to China to adopt her daughter has become a favorite in our home. The pictures are engaging and the content is appropriate for preschoolers. We recently purchased this book thru amazon as a gift for another family going through the adoption process.

Book Review: Great book except for a bit of a mixed message
Summary: 4 Stars

This book is wonderful, showing the babies in the orphanage and the bittersweet ending, with the adoptive mom crying tears for the birth mom who was not able to keep the baby and who will not be forgotten. For adopted and non-adopted kids, a good basic primer on the adoptive parents' hopes in adopting a baby.

I did have a problem with two scenes: the orphanage workers are shown wearing Mao uniforms. This is an outdated image. Most everyone in China these days wear tee shirts and jeans. If the intent of the artist was to show China in exotic, "us v. them" light, then it's not cool.

My other problem (as a friend pointed out) was that the baby is brought home to a room filled with new toys and baby gear. While American homes are generally filled with such stuff (we are the number one consumers in the world), there is a subtle, implicit message that material goods are good, and the one who provides the material goods is the good, worthy parent. From that image the reader might presume that the Chinese birth parent was unable to provide the "baby stuff" which may or may not be true or relevant. What does matter is that the adoptive mom can provide love and security. There are plenty of kids, non-adopted and adopted, who are surrounded by new toys but are unhappy.

I think the book is basically good, and would be greatly improved by dealing with the above two points.

Book Review: Great book for a toddler.
Summary: 4 Stars

I enjoyed this book very much. I read it to my daughter and she is 2 1/2 years old. She understands it, and we discuss issues everytine we read it together. I wish, however, that the story was told from a parents (mom & dad) point of view, instead of just a mother's point of view. I read it as "we." Anyway, wonderful book and I would suggest to anyone who has just adopted from China to buy this book for your toddler. Ease them into the whole adoption thing slowly and early. Makes for a healthier child. Thank you Amazon, for the great condition this book was in, brand new.
