Book Review: Kids go wierd in a Gibson novel. Not his best.

Gibson's latest is a welcome return to form after the relative disappointment of Count Zero. Set in nearer future than Neuromancer, idoru tells the story of two relatively dysfunctional individuals. One, a product of a broken upbringing, and the subject of experimental drug trials, has a peculiar ability to sense form from the seeming randomness of human data generation. The other is a fourteen year-old girl, starstruck by a Japanese pop group from her mother's childhood but kept young by electronic modification. Separately, they embark on a quest to sort out one of the band members' crazed notion that he will marry a personality construct (an idoru). It takes them through a post-earthquake Tokyo, rebuilt by self-replicating robots, and in a curious state of quake-denial.
Gibson's storytelling is impeccable as always, generating scenes and placing the reader right at their heart. By moving the time to nearer the present, his technology vision is less extreme.
This, together with unusual restraint in the speed of the narrative makes idoru a more easily-read book than either Neuromancer or Count Zero. It is, however, no less enjoyable.
