This was yet another novel that I read when I was an 8th-grade middle-schooler (AGE 13) on a list of classics to read.
JAMES BALDWIN IS A POWERFUL WRITER.
I appreciated this book because it told the love story of man and woman who struggle despite the racism of their times to be together, and who also struggle to JUST BE.
Mr. Baldwin's writing style proves that you can write a story that is universal for a mature audience and still have it ooze so angst, turmoil, and other emotions, that you empathize, not just sympathize with the characters. THIS IS A STORY BOUND TO MOVE, if you are mature enough to allow it to.
I enjoyed reading such a mature and well-written novel and I appreciated that the cultural vernacular and the environment were given in such a way as to make the story come alive.
What a great book! Timeless classic.
