When I first heard about Gayle Foreman's new book, I couldn't wait to get my hands on it. It is the kind of story that is both painful and beautiful all at the same time.
Mia is a talented young woman ready to move on from high school, although she is not sure of the direction she wants to move. She has options but each of them has a price. She is an amazing cellist and wants to pursue a career in music but isn't sure she wants to leave friends and family particularly, boyfriend Adam.
All of her options are halted, altered, or changed forever in the flash of an automobile accident. The surrealist aftermath is Mia trying to make sense of the results of the accident from the altered state of hovering between life and death. The detached view that she has is something we all have wondered about, imagined, and many have either had a first hand experience or a close loved one that hovered in such a state.
This is a wonderful book for YA on a very sensitive topic of life and death and how the choices we make can impact everyone we touch. It is a story that will hold you until the last page and leaves room for you to make your own choices. Teen librarians will be glad to have this book to recommend.
