Book Review: A Great Present for a Pre-Teen

Igraine is the younger sister of apprentice magician Albert and daughter of Sir Lamorak and the Fair Melisande, the two greatest magicians in the vicinity, but Igraine wants to become a knight, not a magician. Along with Igraine's talking cat, Sisyphus, they live in Pimpernel Castle. Igraine has made friends with Their nearest neighbor, the Baroness of Darkrock, and her Master of Horse, Bertram, and especially with Lancelot, the Baroness' finest horse.
But the Baroness also has a nephew, who styles himself Osmund the Magnificent, but is perhaps better known as Osmund the Greedy. Osmund and his castellan, Rowan the Heartless come to visit the Baroness, but their real object is to attack Pimpernel Castle and steal Sir Lamorak's famous singing books of magic.
Like all of Cornelia Funke's books, this is a great story to read to your preteen children (ages 9-12 or advanced 6-8) or grandchildren, or for them to read to themselves.
