It's a pity that I'LL HOLD YOU WHILE YOU HURT, by Arthur A. Milward doesn't get more publicity! Some of Arthur's stories have been published in READER'S DIGEST, SATURDAY EVENING POST, INSIGHT, as well as, in other books. Get your tissue box ready before you begin reading as you'll need it! Most of his stories tell of his experiences as a child growing up in North Derbyshire, England.
He was born in a large mansion to parents, who were very formal in their infrequent attentions to him. However, he was blessed with a sister 18 months older than he, and a very kind, understanding nanny whom he adored. She provided the comfort he needed as a very sensitive little boy. Often when hurt or grieving over some loss, she would fold him in her arms and tell him, "I'll hold you while you hurt." Her compassion passed on to him and gave him a window into God's compassion.
One of his most touching stories is of a little girl living in London during World War II, who was sent with many other children, to live in the country. She had already lost her father in the war, and just before her mummy could come to visit her, her mother was killed in an air raid.
As if the loneliness and grief he experienced as a child were not enough for one person, he suffered through the loss of his own little boy to leukemia. Through it all, he wrote with deep emotion of the other little sufferers in his son's ward at the hospital. Milward shares, in excellent narrative, how all this brought him closer to God.
The title, I'LL HOLD YOU WHILE YOU HURT, became a talisman to me during sleepless nights of pain. Often I ask God to hold me while I hurt.
