Book Reviews of I'm Not the New MeBook Review: Another Urban Hipster's Search for...What is she searching for? Summary: 2 Stars
Depsite its autobiographical nature, "I'm Not The New Me" is really just another piece of chick lit. It's another Gen-X hipster writing witty, sarcastic and cynical stuff on life in the big city. The only difference is that this woman is fat and trying not to be. At first I sympathized, I really did. She struggled so hard to lose weight. She wanted that magnet! Then the book stopped being about weight loss. It was about her relationships (that all seemed to fail), her blog, and eventually became a book about writing a book and was hardly about weight loss at all. I suppose it was for the best considering McClure's desire to "lose weight" rather than "be healthy". She struggled for her magnet while smoking, drinking heavily, and not always exercising regularly. In other words, she was really making no effort to improve her lifestyle, just trying to be thinner.
I was originally a fan of the Pound site, but once I read this book, I was very put off by Wendy McClure and her observations. The book had its amusing points, but in the end, felt like an ego trip.
Book Review: Different Summary: 5 Stars
This book is different from other weight loss memoirs. It's different because it's anti-inspirational. I know that sounds like a bad thing, but maybe it's not. Wendy McClure is honest, she's real. You don't have to worry about her pretending to be something she's not because she isn't. She's going to be herself even if it pisses you off.
If you are looking for an inspirational weight loss story, check out Chantal Hobbs, Jennette Fulda, or Shauna Reid. Wendy McClure is not going to give you one. Inspiration might have it's place, but so does this book.
Book Review: Just OK Summary: 2 Stars
I wanted to give 2 1/2 stars, as this book was really just a straight "OK, not particularly good nor particularly bad". I wanted to like it and think it had potential, but when I was done I was just kind of apathetic. There were definately some cute passages, but overall I didn't feel like the author let any real personality come through. I felt like she kind of meandered along, telling us about her life a bit, but never really getting to the point. I don't think everything necessarily has to have a grand point or meaning, but in general I like to get at least a little something out of what I'm reading. Towards the end I just wanted to finish it up so I could read something more interesting.
Book Review: Loved it. Summary: 4 Stars
I loved this book. The author writes beautifully and I felt so many of the things that she has gone through. And? She's hilarious and pretty much rules.
Loved it!
Book Review: OK book Summary: 2 Stars
I thought this book was kind of cute. It has no tips on losing weight. It is just one woman's story about dealing with life in realtion to diet issues. It was not an inspiration to me but for the price. I thought it was a decent break from dealing with my own life.
