Book Reviews of I'm with the Band: Confessions of a GroupieBook Review: One woman's journey through rock music... Summary: 4 StarsI grew up in the 70's, about a decade behind Ms. Des Barres, and found her book to not only be a sincere look at her emotional journey, but a fascinating perspective on the music scene during a time when I was still pretty much in elementary school.
Miss Pamela's writing style kept me interested and entertained, while her journal notes added insights into the workings of her mind and heart during this long and winding odyssey. A fun read, but with more depth than I expected.
Book Review: fascinating and honest, any lover of 70's rock culture will love it Summary: 5 StarsI read this book years ago and was captivated by Pamela des Barres' honesty, humor, personality, and warmth, as well as the stories she has to tell, of course. She also writes very well. She was nanny to Frank Zappa's children for a time and was close to members of Led Zeppelin, among other famous music figures of the time. Reading the book it was easy to see why these artists liked her, she's extremely likable, and, like them, is a very creative person. The book was delightful. Anyone who was or is very into late '60s and '70s rock or rock/pop/alternative music in general and who can understand and even appreciate how a person might become a "groupie" will love this book. It's like an adventure. It was totally interesting reading Des Barres' experiences from those years and hearing personal accounts about some of these incredible people. For example, kindly (brilliant) Frank Zappa who employed Pamela as a nanny because he knew she needed the job. It was so neat hearing about him and his adorable kids. (Also nostalgic of course. There is that sad side to the book, of course, as some of these brilliant artists are no longer with us.) I liked des Barres' sensitivity and romanticism coupled with her free-spiritedness and "groupieness" (as a young woman). I thoroughly enjoyed the book and couldn't put it down when I read it years ago, and was just looking to get another copy after all these years because I was telling my husband about it. I know I'll enjoy reading it again. I think it's really neat of Pamela des Barres to share her memoirs from her years as a young woman, and so honestly.
Book Review: Confessions of a Fan Summary: 5 StarsThis was an amazing book--very Almost Famous-esque. I highly recommend it. It's a fun read for those interested in the lives of rockstars and the people who surrounded them.
Book Review: I'm with the Band Summary: 4 StarsI enjoyed this look back on a life filled with love and musicians - and the love OF musicians.
It seems Miss Pamela was always trying to see the best in others while not recognizing the best in herself. She grew up in the most happening place at the most happening time EVER!! I wish I could have tagged along!
Book Review: She's Still With The Band Summary: 5 StarsSay what you will about Ms. Des Barres, the book is a classic in its own right. Delightful and dishy, painfully honest, and hilarious at unexpected moments. I've been lucky enough to meet Miss Pamela and to correspond (albeit briefly) with her, and what you read is what you get. She's the best.
