Book Reviews of In Her Shoes : A NovelBook Review: The thinking girls 'chick book' Summary: 4 StarsI have read more than my share of Chick lit and I have been getting a little tired of the similarity of the books but Jennifer Weiner writes fresh and different stories. This book wasn't quite a good Weiner's first novel Maggie and Rose were interesting man characters who were complete opposites and both thought each other got the better deal, just like real sisters! 'Good in bed' but it is still well worth a read. I liked how Joy and Cannie from the first novel make an appearence, making it seem that little bit more real.
Book Review: For sisters everywhere Summary: 5 StarsI read Good in Bed and loved it, so I was looking forward to sitting down with In Her Shoes. And I nearly didn't get up again. It's one of those books that you want to read walking down the street or under your desk. I even thought about taking a sickie. The sisters Rose and Maggie are totally different, but are both fabulous and involving characters. Their relationship is so real it made me wince (and start to think about forgiving my sister). And the grandmother and friends in Florida are hilarious. Basically - funny, sad, involving and so brilliantly written that you don't even realise you're reading. If you enjoy this, check out Jennifer Weiner's weblog on her website - she's very cool and funny. If you don't enjoy it, well, you can't be my friend.
Book Review: Intelligent and entertaining Summary: 4 StarsIt's so refreshing to find flawed characters in Chick Lit! The heroine is a standard size (big), her perfectly formed sister has dyslexia, which has led her to flit from job to job, the love interest is also less than gorgeous, and there are two elderly Floridians! This book is warm, empathetic and amusing. I really enjoyed Jennifer Warner's first novel, and her follow-up is every bit as good. In fact, the main character from 'Good In Bed' makes a brief appearance. Not essential to the plot, but a nice touch!
Book Review: This book is NOT what you think Summary: 5 StarsI eagerly awaited the second novel from Jennifer Weiner, after reading and devouring her first offering 'Good In Bed'. The only problem with both of these books are the attrocious 'blurb' and book covers, which do nothing to allay the fears of this being another 'chick lit', girl meets boy, predictable story. For those who are put off by these factors, please try to look past them, and you will find intelligent fiction which is a true pleasure to read. I almost didn't want to read the second book, as I was put off by the blurb, thinking I had definitely read this story, or some amalgamation of it, somewhere before. However, I am glad that I did. 'In Her Shoes' tells the story of two sisters, Maggie and Rose, who could not be more different. With this kind of plot, it would be easy to fal into the over used cliches, but the author manages to make the characters original and true to life. There is a sense of reality in both books, both deal with human problems and do not sugar coat them. The characters are not 'drop dead gorgeous' or 'stunning' (with the exception of Maggie), which makes the whole thing easier to imagine and understand. The story is a simple one, but one which is written with such skill that it seems fresh and untold. Whilst I would recommend the book to anyone, I didn't find it as engaging as 'Good In Bed'. It is just as good and a more than adequate second novel.
Book Review: In Her Shoes Summary: 4 StarsI loved Jennifer Weiner's first novel, 'Good in Bed' and was looking forward to her second. In Her Shoes did not disappoint. I did find the first few chapters a little bit slow, but after that I had trouble putting it down. I would definitely recommend this novel.
