Book Reviews of In Her Shoes : A Novel

Book Review: A decent book
Summary: 4 Stars

I thought "in Her Shoes" was a very good movie. It blended laughs and emotions well and used the considerable talents of its stars, Toni Collette, Cameron Diaz and Shirley Maclaine. It was a melodrama about two very different sisters, their estranged grandmother and the hidden emotions bubbling under the surface. I was interested in reading the book and I don't have any regrets now that I've had.
The book is very well-written, showcasing Weiner's obvious talent in writing a fluent, fun book rich in both comical and emotional content. The characters are very real (even more than their movie counterparts) and are easy to relate to. Rose is the older, responsible, lawyer sister with a bad wardrobe except her shoes (they always fit). Maggie is the younger, promiscuous, dyslexic sister that constantly asks Rose for help and a shelter. Ella is the long-lost grandmother, living in a "retirement home for active seniors" and feeling hollow, although she has her days filled with various volunteer work and other activities that help people. However, she knows that there are only two women out there that she should get in touch with and help them as a grandmother is supposed to.
Jennifer Weiner's "In Her Shoes" packs enough emotions to supply a regular soap opera for years. However, she keeps it down to earth and real, and manages to pull it off. It is a decent, if somewhat pulpy book that is great for the beach or those winter nights at home.

Book Review: Not as good as "Good in Bed"
Summary: 3 Stars

This book is not as good ad "Good In Bed", but it's still a fun read. I found the characters inconsistant and the story unfolds illogically. I won't go into the details and spoil the story. I think Maggie's transformation is too easy and unrealistic. It wasn't well-explained why the characters are the way they are. I laughed and cried with Cannie from "Good in Bed", but this book didn't do much for me. If you want to read a book by Jennifer Weiner, definitely go for "Good in Bed".

Book Review: Another great story from Jennifer Weiner!
Summary: 5 Stars

Just like Good in Bed, Goodnight Nobody and her other books, I had a hard time putting this story down! I loved In Her Shoes, you will too!

Book Review: Amazing
Summary: 5 Stars

When a writer can take a horrible person and turn them into a hero, they've won me as a reader for life. Weiner has earned a spot on my auto-buy list and she's never disappointed.

Book Review: OH the shoes!
Summary: 4 Stars

Rose Feller is the responsible, intelligent, caretaking older sister we all know and love. She is not the most stylish, attractive or popular girl, but she's dependable, and a good person, and since she can't get anything else right, she buys fantastic expensive shoes. Maggie feller is the complete opposite. The rebellious, angry, irresponsible and slutty younger sister. She is NOT a very nice person, and takes complete advantage of everyone around her, and covets her sister's shoe collection. Therein lies the crux of this story, two sisters, complete opposites, and yet, more alike than they know, because of their underlying pain of losing a mother too early in life.

I wasn't sure I'd be able to finish this book, because I was completely disgusted by Maggie's behavior and even more so by Rose's putting up with it. And yet, I stuck it out, and am very glad I did. Jennifer Weiner does a great job of creating characters that the reader can't help but to love, to hate, and to love to hate, and hate to love. By the end of this novel, I wanted to hate Maggie, but I couldn't anymore. I'd lived too much with both sisters, and their estranged grandmother, and now they made sense, in their own crazy way.

Very well written, great character development, wonderful backstory, I was hooked to the end. This is not your typical chick lit, it has a deeper soul to it, and readers will enjoy learning about why the characters do the things they do, and act the way they act. The grandmother adds a nice angle to the story as well, and I loved her relationship with Lewis and Mrs. Lefkowitz. Oh, and the shoes? I covet them too.
