Book Reviews of In Her Shoes : A NovelBook Review: Thankfully not in her Shoes Summary: 2 StarsI can't believe this was made into a movie. I wanted to love this based on the premise. It's painful to lose your mother when you are young (I know first hand) but this book does not even come close to really examining the loss Rose and her ne-er do well sister Maggie experience in any depth.
Maggie comes off as so unrealistic and unappealing it is hard to fathom how Rose can take her back - over and over again. In the book she steals herself an Ivy League education (as well as IDs, shoes, money, sister's boyfriend, sister's car, sister's life, etc. etc).
In the movie, perhaps because Cameron Diaz is playing her, she's softened, toned down and sanitized from feckless slut to candy striper reading to blind people in a hospital. Puhleez! Total dreck!! She is just a total loser.
Any depth that existed in the book was carefully excised by the time it was turned into a screenplay. There are actually some beautiful moments in the book - poetry written by somebody else!
So impressive is the one line "I carry your heart..." they have Cameron Diaz repeat it over and over again in the movie and Weiner didn't even write it.
There are very few similarities between book and movie. I would recommend reading and seeing something else entirely.
Book Review: Not anywhere as good as her other books Summary: 2 StarsI read Jennier Weiner's other books before reading this book, including her newest novel, "Goodnight Nobody". This book is my least favorite of them all. I am actually surprised this book was made into a movie before "Good In Bed". In this book, I didn't feel the characters were given enough depth. The story seemed to move along too quickly. I like to know more details on a character than what was given. It almost seemed like Jennifer Weiner was rushed in writing this book, like she had a deadline to fulfill. I was left wanting to know more about what happened afterwards, and wanting to know what happened to some of the plot lines in the book that seemed to just fall off. The writing just didn't seem complete. I would recommend her other books over this one, and it is probably the only book of hers that I won't be likely to read a second time.
Book Review: A fun novel Summary: 5 StarsThis is a very good book to read. It is about sisters and is very funny. It is really much better than the movie, but I read it long before the movie came out. The author also has another book that is great. It is called good in bed. I really am not a person that gets into novels much anymore, but I thought this was so great. Really a light and enjoyable read. If you do not feel like reading it watch the movie, but if you do read this first. The movie changes and leaves out some stuff, but does pretty good with it.
Book Review: Sweet & Funny Summary: 5 Starsan easy read, your eyes just glide through the pages and your heart rises and sinks as characters in this book are going through their transformations.
Book Review: Chick-Lit fun Summary: 4 StarsThis was the second book by Jennifer Weiner, and I purposely did not watch the movie until I finished the book, and as usual, the book was way better. The story of wild Maggie and plain Rose and the chemistry of sisterly love/hate was well written. The way that Ella is brought back into their lives and the Father and Step-Monster were a natural flow. All in all, I would recommed this as a light read.
