Book Reviews of In Her Shoes : A Novel

Book Review: this is a great book!
Summary: 5 Stars

I loved this book! I did not want to put it down. It is very similar to the movie but there is a lot more to it then what was in the movie. I think it's actually better then the movie although I enjoyed both the book and the movie. I highly recommend this! Next I'm going to read the sisterhood of the traveling pants by Ann Brashares.

Book Review: Wonderful
Summary: 5 Stars

This book, made me laugh, it made me cry, this story is SO true! I know that they made the movie, and it is a GREAT movie, but unless you have read the book, you are missing so many amazing and wonderful parts of the story!
This story is truthful when describing the layers of the relationship between sisters. It is just a wonderful story!

Book Review: Actually 3.5 stars, and better than Good in Bed...
Summary: 3 Stars

I was not sufficiently impressed with Good in Bed, but after seeing the previews for the movie based on this book, I thought it looked interesting, as my sisters and I are all very different from each other...this book was a fast read and I definitely found the subject matter more interesting than Good in Bed, as it forced Jennifer Weiner to see life through the eyes of two very different women; however, it was still a little too saccharine for me. OF COURSE Rose would find the love of her life and marry him in the end, and OF COURSE she would forgive her impetuous younger sister for "stealing" her beau from the beginning of the novel. This is real life, folks...I can't imagine my sisters doing such a thing to me, but I know that if they did, no little-known grandmother or handmade wedding dress could make things okay again.

Book Review: Not as Good as "Good in Bed" ( 3.5)
Summary: 3 Stars

I guess I expected this book to be as good as "Good in Bed", so I was disappointed. I have to say that I have read all of her books, and am reading "Goodnight Nobody" as we speak. Unfortunately, I just didn't enjoy this one as much as the others. I would have given it 3.5 stars, but that was not an option, and I am not sure it really deserved a 4.

The plot is simple. Meet Maggie (a beautiful, confused, irresponsible, and needy woman), who is the sister to Rose (a heavy-set, successful woman). Now you should know the problem....family secrets, deception and jealousy. Maggie does an unthinkable and unforgiveable thing...she sleeps with Rose's boyfriend. At this time, Rose kicks her out and shuns her (she's already angry that Maggie borrows or takes her shoes...that's one thing that they have in common, the same shoe size and love for pretty shoes). As we see Maggie struggle with her own demons, she begins to develop a sense of self when she moves in with her grandmother in a retirement community. She finds the strength to unravel family secrets and dissect her life, to weave a new one. She and her sister eventually make peace in this novel about family tragedy (their mother killed herself), forgiveness (each other and their father) and love. It is worth reading, but if you are expecting to feel the way you did after reading "Good in Bed", you won't but something close to it.

Book Review: Modern Fable of Sisters
Summary: 4 Stars

I'd give this four and a half stars if I could. I liked this book better than Good In Bed, and I especially liked the character of slutty beautiful Maggie Feller, who loves her dumpy, smart sister, Rose, but takes advantage of her.

I didn't expect Maggie to like Maggie after her terrible, selfish behavior but she really grew on me. I loved the way she matured and how this maturity was not tied to a relationship with a man but by connecting with her family. Rose's transformation is a little too pat which is why I call this a fable.

I loved the touching, funny scenes at the Grandmother's retirement community. A really entertaining and touching story.
