Book Reviews of In Her Shoes : A NovelBook Review: Dissapointing ending Summary: 3 StarsI thought this book was very good until I got to the ending...it left so many holes in the story that I just wasn't satisfied. Its not that its a bad read....like I said it was great until the ending, but the ending really killed it. There are so many other books out there that I wouldn't reccomend wasting time to be dissapointed by this one. Go rent the movie...its better than the book and doesn't leave as many holes.
Book Review: Charming... Summary: 4 StarsNot normally the type of book I'd pick up. But somehow, I was tempted, and allowed myself a little guilty pleasure. Definately don't regret it. Characters you feel for, written extremely well.
At first, I was frustrated... "Don't put up with these behaviors" I steamed at one of the characters. But the book pulls together it all intricately and beautifully, as you can only find in books, yet still amazingly realistically.
Awesome book.
Book Review: Better than the Movie! Summary: 5 StarsIn her shoes was mainly about the relationship between two sisters. But it also had to do with their relationship with their father, his new wife, and their mother's mom...
It started out with you learning about each of the sisters and how they were so different from each other. One sister, Rose, was a neat freak who worried endlessly about everything. She was successful at her job as a lawyer, but had no clue how to say no to her sister. Her sister (Maggie) was really cute and had all the guys she wanted, but beause she was dyslexic and didn't know what that meant, she had really low self-esteem, she hid it well under a "I don't are about you" attitude. The two ended up finding out that while they were totally different as sisters, that was all they had and grew to appreciate eachother for that reason.
I would rate this book a ten on a scale from one to ten and would recommend it to anyone from age 30 to 75. Whether you have a sister or not, it still talked about the dynamics between different relationships in the family.
I would recommend it to anyone that likes a good laugh and cry, it was a well written story and I found myself not wanting it to end. Even when it did end, you wondered what happend to them after that short glimpse into their lives and they became real to you. I think it would be considered a chick book and probably would be enjoyed more by women than men.
Book Review: Not Your Usual Chick Lit Summary: 4 StarsThis novel is more about the relationship of two sisters than it is a romantic comedy. And it is more layered and emotionally involving than the usual "chick lit" such as The Devil Wears Prada or The Nanny Diaries or Elegance. I read it in one sitting, so it clearly isn't hard to digest, but it stayed with me. I wondered which of us could be as forgiving as Rose, even though the author eventually showed that Maggie was more sympathetic a character than first perceived. With its neatly tied up ending, it's easy to see why Hollywood snapped up the rights. I now will make an effort to watch the DVD. Comment: I found 4 or 5 mistakes that an editor should have caught, especially by the time the book went into soft copy. This seems to be a hallmark of best sellers, these days...
Book Review: Some relationships are worth preserving Summary: 5 StarsRose and Maggie Feller may be sisters, but the only things they share are DNA and their shoe size. "In Her Shoes" tells the story of these polar opposite sisters who take the concept of sibling rivalry to an entirely new level. Rose is the older and practical sister, successful in her career as a lawyer but lacking self-confidence and style. Maggie struggled in school and never held down a steady job in her life, and she's used to getting her way 100% of the time, regardless of what the consequences may be.
When Maggie gets evicted from yet another apartment, she turns up on Rose's doorstep. Rose can't bring herself to say no to her little sister, so she agrees to let Maggie camp out at her apartment. Soon the bill collectors are calling at all hours of the day and night and Maggie infuriates Rose by trashing her apartment, stealing her shoes, bringing home a random dog, and eventually seducing one of Rose's rare boyfriends. Rose eventually throws Maggie out on the street, and suddenly the little sister finds herself with no one to take care of her. Maggie ends up traveling to Princeton University where she hides out and goes through a period of great personal growth. Back home in Philadelphia, Rose is making some pretty big changes of her own. The story eventually brings both sisters to Florida, where a mysterious grandmother that the girls never knew growing up ends up being the saving grace that helps them repair their relationship.
I really, REALLY enjoyed this book! I have avoided reading any Jennifer Weiner novels up until now because I thought they would fall into the "mindless chick lit" category, but I was mistaken. "In Her Shoes" is a very powerful book that is funny in parts but also very emotional. Rose, Maggie, and their grandmother Ella are three incredibly strong women who manage to overcome numerous obstacles to seek their own personal redemptions in life. This book is all about being true to yourself and recognizing the importance of family. I recommend this book to all women and I can't wait to read more of Weiner's work!
