Book Review: She is superb in writing police procedurals

New Scotland Yard Detective Sargeant Barbara Havers receives a suspension pending the results of an Internal Affairs investigation into her recent activities. Three months later, the brass informs Barbara she will receive a letter of reprimand and a downgrade in rank to detective constable. Barbara appreciates that she was not fired and believes that only the efforts of her partner Detective Thomas Lynley kept her on the force. However, he informs her he refused to go to bat for her because he thinks she made very bad decisions. Barbara knows that her partner no longer trusts her. When Thomas is assigned to investigate the deaths of two people inside Derbyshire's Nine Sisters Henge, he does not choose Barbara as his partner. One of the victims turns out to be the daughter of a former department undercover agent, Andy Maiden, who calls in chips to have his former colleague (Lynley) handle the case. As Lynley learns more about the deceased, the more suspects appear. He also begins to understand why his former partner made the decisions that she did, knowing it would place her in deep trouble with the brass.
Once again award-winning author Elizabeth George creates a fantastic police procedural that will satisfy her legions of fans while bringing in many new readers. The who-done-it is superbly set up and well executed by linking two separate incidents that appear to have nothing in common into a surprise ending. The strained relationship between Barbara and Thomas provides insight into both characters as well as an understanding about police partnering. This suspense-laden novel is going to the top of the charts faster than light speed.
