Book Review: A "living Book" to be relived again and again

One of the themes of this book is the story of us all really and our search for significance, a meaningful life and our search for the heart of our creator. The book is, on the surface, the story of an enclosed house of nuns living a contemplative existence of work and prayer. The story begins and is told through the life of Philippa Talbot, a successful London career woman who has it all. She has it all only "suddenly it wasn't enough." At 40 she leaves her professional career and enters the Abbey as a candidate. The novel unfolds the life of this English Benedictine house from the time of Philippa's entrance until she leaves to start another house in Japan. The personal inner struggles of all humans everywhere seem to come to life as they are woven through the story of this house of women who have vowed to live and die sequestered behind the walls of this house in a life ordered and ruled by the mother Abbess in submission to God.
While this story has a Catholic setting, it is really the story of all christians and their struggle for a life that is useful in Christ. This book happens to be a personal favorite of mine to be reread over the years. It is a wholesome meaningful choice for young adults with enough layers and depth to be enjoyed as the years progress. This is truly a living book with memorable characters. Surely one of them will provide us with a personality we can relate to in our own personal journey. While I am quite sure many of us aren't nuns sequestered from the "real world," we can all relate to feeling inadequate to our called tasks, finding it difficult to relate with different personalities laboring beside us in the community we live in and the desire for our daily toil to have a higher significance than just passing time.
While this book may require more attention for some who are fed on a diet of quick 2-hour-read romances, It is worth the initial attention required to follow what is happening and get all the characters in your mind. Once you you get sucked into the story though, you feel like you are there watching it all happen. I am glad to see that this book has been reprinted and is being offered to a new generation of readers. I'd like to see my top favorite book by Godden , CHINA COURT , be reprinted for modern readers attention as well.
