Book Review: "Do you want marvels?"

My title is taken from a line in this amazing book, which alludes to detective Cassie Maddox's memory of a pedophile's approach to her in her childhood. The question encapsulates the magical way the book moves between the marvelous and the mundane, in the tradition of John Fowles's "The Magus" or Donna Tartt's "The Secret History." If you want marvels, read this book. Some secrets stay hidden, many are revealed, the wondrous first-person narrator remains both entirely confiding and held at a distance. He is the liar who never lies. By the book's end, we know him as well as he knows himself, which is to say not well. We like and despise him at the same time. In multiple, complex ways he is our guide and surrogate through the mystery.
This book was the worthy winner of the 2008 Edgar award. I can truthfully say it's the best mystery I've read this year, technically admirable and also tense and true at the level of the sentence. As an American reader I loved the Dublin locality and the subtle hint of the Irish dialect in the characters' speech. Really a wonderful tour de force.
