Book Reviews of Infected: A Novel

Book Review: "Non Stop Terror" by an envying writer
Summary: 3 Stars

I made a mistake in my last review of his excellent novel, "Infected." I thought it came out recently, and called my first review, "I Liked It When It Was Called 28 Days Later." I was snide because I was jealous of his success and skill. I found out that he had it out on his website since 1993 and he emailed me politely and said he find it strange that I would decry the lack of originally when I wrote a dystopia horror novel like "1984" except with deaf people in it. I guess I was put into place by the facts. So, it is not just another novel but a frightening one from the stage of being infected to the parasites taking over the host's body.

However, scary as it is, it seemed to borrow tradition from horror movies in term of Let the Military Handle This. The fighting scenes are well written and some of the reactions of the soldiers are well done, reminding me of Kurt Vonnegut's realistic vision of warlike behavior. I look forward to the next sequel, "Contagious", as soon as it comes out in paperbacks.

I hope you all find this more helpful than my recent review of "Infected."

Book Review: "Scary" Perry Dawsey
Summary: 5 Stars

A very refreshing book to read. Bloody fast paced fun to be had by all. Perry Dawsey is the MAN!

Book Review: A Damn Good Read
Summary: 5 Stars

Not only am I an avid listener of the podiobooks, but a purchaser of the dead wood version as well. The book is great entertainment and really works at the primal core of what is important to all of us - survival.

I agree with the other reviewer that if you need to read 100-200 pages before the story unfolds, it's not worth it. INFECTION grabs you from the first chapter and leaves you wanting to turn the page before you finish reading it.

Keep it going Scott. It's been great for your fans to see you grow as an author. The book signing at Book Soup was awesome. Looking forward to the next time your in L.A./O.C. Go Lions!

Book Review: A Fun Page Turner Read!!!
Summary: 4 Stars

Now, I shouldn't write this review since I am 50 or 60 pages shy of finishing this book. So far, this book has ruined a few good nights of sleep for me... I kept on reading well past when I should have.

I'm writing this review now because of some recent reviews that trashed this story as being cliched, not true sci-fi, or a pale imitation of Stephen King. This guy exceeds the King of today by a long shot.

Now, I personally prefer post apocalyptic fiction and this book was inaccurately listed in that group. I had purchased it while thinking it was within my preferred genre. This book is not post apocalyptic fiction. While I should feel jipped, I didn't. It is a fascinating and fun read.

The primary character is an infected individual fighting his way through it. His back story and developments while dealing with the infection are tragic. You care about him even when he is absolutely in the wrong. The other characters are those within the CIA and CDC trying to track it down and understand it while trying to retain secrecy. It's these secondary characters where some reviewers had claimed as unsatisfying and underdeveloped. This is not the case. To develop them further would have been gratuitous and, if done, those same naysayers would have claimed as unecessary plot points. I've worked for the government... seen the arrogance, ladder climbing, hidden-talent and difficulties in getting stuff done. This book is surprisingly accurate.

Consider the average four and a half stars for this book. Those negative reviews are in the vast minority.

I haven't finished with this book yet but it has me captivated. I really like the science behind the infection... it seems so logical and plausible. And I really enjoy the characters.

Again, I had walked into reading this book thinking it was one thing (based on related links) and it wasn't what I had expected. Nevertheless, it is a fun, exciting and fulfilling read on a lot of levels.

Normally, I am not a big sci-fi fan. But this book is so well written, characters so well drawn, and so "have-to-know-next," that I highly recommend this book. And there's a sequel out soon. I already have it on order.

Book Review: A Horrific Delight!
Summary: 5 Stars

"Infected" is a wonderfully chilling horror, very graphic (for mature audiences only), and scarier than anything I've read in years... Merges Sci Fi and Horror beautifully. The characters are powerfully real. From the start there is a powerful sense of horror, that builds relentlessly as the novel progresses. There is a constant sense of mortal danger which is enhanced by the uncomfortable knowledge that not enough facts are known to combat the looming horror. This really kept me on the edge of my seat throughout.

The more questions are answered in the course of the story, the more horrific things become. All in all the book is a roller coaster ride into terror, pain, paranoia and even insanity. The theme of being taken over from the inside out leaves a feeling of deep dread. This really is a book I couldn't put down. The best written horror I've read in a long time!

Highly recommended! Sure hope there's a sequel!
