Book Reviews of Inkheart (Inkheart Trilogy)

Book Review: Great Storyline, but way too long
Summary: 4 Stars

This book was very interesting to read. However, I found myself trying to rush myself through it, because it just seemed to drag on and on. It was like Cornelia Funke was trying to make it long like the HP series or something, I'm not sure. It's one that if I ever did try to read again, I would skim through it and that's it.

Book Review: Great book for older children
Summary: 4 Stars

I read to my 10 and 7 year old boys at night. We were excited to start this one and the boys have enjoyed the story. However, I have done some editing as I read aloud. The story is imaginative and well told with well-drawn characters, but there is some mild language, which I wouldn't mind so much except that not only the bad guys use it but also the fiesty, matronly aunt. She is an amusing character but I thought she didn't need to be quite so colorful and less of the expletives would not have marred the story. The other objection I have is the underlying sexual tones in regards to the maids of the villians and the young girl Meggie. Not that it is out of place in the situation but, like the language, would not have been missed in a children's fantasy book. The violence could have been toned down a bit as it relates to the children in the story, too. A lot of the characters are quite evil, but their is depth to the two main bad guys and some interesting ideas as to why they may be that way. Mo (the dad) and Meggie have a wonderful relationship and Dustfinger is a sympathetic conflicted character. Inkheart is an interesting book for kids and parents and can be used to start some great conversations and "what if" scenarios if you are reading it together or will certainly get a child's imagination going if they are reading it on their own. We will be ordering the sequel!

Book Review: I am now a Funke Fan!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I am not a kid. Actually I'm a grandma and I discovered Cornelia Funke's books just by accident. I'm now hooked on her stories and I recommend her work to my friends with or without grandchildren.

Book Review: I can't wait for the 3rd volume and you'll be like me if you start
Summary: 5 Stars

You barely have time to breathe from the 1st word of this 1st volume until the last word of the 2d one.
A book about books, you hallucinate when finally you read about those character coming to life when you turn a page, when you go to sleep and think about them. When you read about the smell, the noise and feeling of a book in your hands. But it is much more than that. It is about going from one world (not in the future at all) to ours. It is about good and bad, treachery and trust, family and loneliness in one word as in a hundred it is about life. And what a life. There's a mix of fantasy and reality and I loved it. Cornelia Funke is a great writer, I can't stay in place waiting for the 3rd volume. Enjoy,
Claude

Book Review: I enjoyed the book a lot more than the recent movie!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is the first installment of the Inkheart series.

Meggie's father Mo has been hiding from town to town for nine years. So much that their van is more of a house than their present abode.

One night, a strange character by the name of Dustfinger comes to their house to warn Mo about Capricorn. They all escape to a castle owned by Meggie's aunt, Elinor, a spinster that has spent all her life collecting books. Here they are captured by Capricorn's men, as Dustfinger gives them way. The bad men steal a strange book from Mo.

Unbeknown to Meggie, Mo has an interesting talent: when he reads aloud, things, and sometimes people, come out of their stories and into the real world! (Silvertongue) Unfortunately things from the outside world may also go back inside the stories.

Even though Mo works at restoring books and owns a large amount of then, he stopped reading aloud nine years ago when Meggie's mother disappeared as he created Capricorn and Dustfinger. They were characters in a book titled Inkheart, the book that was stolen that night.

The evil Capricorn wants to use Mo's talents to bring himself great wealth and power. He destroys the last known copy of the book, so Mo searches the author of the book, Fenoglio, who is also captured by Capricorn's men

After escaping from Capricorn's village, they all go separate ways and Meggie discovers that Mo isn't the only one who can read things to life. So can she.

This is an enchanting story full of adventure, suspense, and magic. The characters are vivid and delightful. Unlike many books for younger readers there is a distinct emphasis on the importance of family as seen in the close relationship between Meggie and her father. Lightly magical, humorous, and fun, Inkheart will appeal to those who like adventure and fantasy, and to anyone who ever wished a story could come to life.

The book is fantastic. A page turner. I read the 560 pages in a two and a half days.
