Book Reviews of InkspellBook Review: Artistic writing! Exciting concept! Fun reading! Summary: 5 Stars
You can tell by the first two books in this trilogy that the author has a deep, abidng love of books. This is the second in the series and the concept of having book characters come alive within a book within a book is quite complex ... but magical and wondroous.
This writer is excellent at bringing her characters alive by the use of clever words and fabulous description.
Cornelia Funke is a marvel, and I look forward to the third book in this artistic, exciting, fun trilogy.
Book Review: Audio Reader Stinks, What a Shame Summary: 2 Stars
After hearing Lynn Redgrave read Inkheart, I was so eager for more, but Brendan Fraser, the reader, is so concentrated on his different accents and shallow interpretation that I can only listen for a bit without shaking my head and wondering why they hired him for the reading. He gets in the way of the story. Someone in the Marketing Department must have thought he was good, what a pity. I'd rather have a bland reader and then at least I could use my own imagination. There is no maturity and not much warmth in his voice. I hope someone else reads it someday. Better read it in book form, I say. Best of Luck to You All and Happy Audio Experiences!!
Book Review: Author turned South on this book Summary: 2 Stars
I am a teacher of gifted children, and many of my young students were reading Funke's work. I was delighted with Inkheart. It was a whole new concept in looking at books, and it was interesting enough to hold the attention of even my most inattentive students! I moved quickly on to Inkspell, and was subsequently disappointed by this talented author. The storyline was interesting, and there was a good contrast between the good and bad -- a book character quality I look for in children's books. However, Ms. Funke launched into sometimes sensitive adult themes with her romance story lines. Her profanity, which grew more profuse and spread to even the "good" characters as the book continued, was inexcusable in a children's book. This book is at a 5th grade level, but I recently reported these facts to our local libraries -- it is no longer listed as "juvenile fiction" in those libraries. Maybe I'm "too" innocent ... or maybe I just like to maintain the innocence of my students and children. I have a feeling I am not alone. It is a shame that an author who has gained the following of so many parents would abuse that trust by inserting inappropriate language and themes into what could have been one of her best pieces. The ending sounds as if there will be a sequel -- I'll skip that one, thank you.
Book Review: Awesome Summary: 5 Stars
These books are great. I work in a library and I love books but I usually don't have time to read much adult fiction. So I turn to my precious Young Adult section. We are always getting new things and the colorful cover of Inkheart caught my attention. I thought I'd give it a try and I fell in love with it. It's a great story for adults or teenagers. When we got Inkspell in I was so excited! I just finished it yesterday and I'm dying for a third one to hurry and come out. I've gotten really attached to the characters and I get so sad when books come to an end. (I don't know what I'm going to do when Harry Potter's over) I suppose I'll try reading some of Cornelia Funke's other books, but the characters won't be the same so I don't think I'll enjoy them as much. I highly recommend these books!

This is an awesome sequel to the first book! Just as exciting and whimsical as the first! I highly recomend it!
