Book Reviews of Innocent In Death

Book Review: Great book, but I wonder...
Summary: 4 Stars

A great fan of JD Robb's, I just finished it and I wasn't at all surprised or shocked as I had identified the killer very early in the book. How? Because Agatha Christie's "Crooked House" is a favorite of mine, and I very soon "recognized" the character, despite minor differences. Then I knew. Understand me well (before you burn me at the stake ;-)), I'm not saying plagiary there. The story, thrilling and clever as usual, isn't the same at all, even though there's also some hot chocolate involved in Christie's book if I remember well. Then there's the marital crisis Eve and Roarke go through and the emotional roller-coaster it takes us on until the rewarding resolution. And I love JD Robb's universe, just as lively and unique in that book as in all the others. But that one character I saw as very much the same!
JD Robb is an admirer of Dame Christie, as brilliantly proved in "Witness In Death" where Eve offers us a "a la Hercule Poirot" resolution. Probably an unconscious reminiscence. Such a prolific author as Nora Roberts is allowed to sometimes not question too much where inspiration comes from. So long as it goes on coming!

Book Review: Great read!
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this book and put off reading it for a few months. I admit, I was worried about the conflict with Eve and Roarke. When I finally sat down to read it, I had to skip ahead to the "making up" scenes to make sure all would end up right in their world before I could take the plunge.

I shouldn't have worried. The book was great, the mystery was intriguing, and with the murderer, I kept thinking, "No. Couldn't be." Just like Mira and Whitney! ;o)

The scenes with Summerset in the last two books were awesome. I love that character, he is so complex, and we all know deep down he and Eve have an affection for each other. This book shows even more of that. I hope this is Nora's start of featuring more of him.

I want to comment on those that think Eve doesn't grow as a human being. Rubbish. I have seen her grow over the course of the books, did you notice that she went to both Peabody and Mira with her troubles? She never would have done that before. And besides that, if you will note, the entire series takes place over a couple of years. How much growth do you want in a short amount of time? Quit being so nit picky! Sheesh!

One last comment: I understand why Nora wrote the conflict between Eve and Roarke, and she handled it well. But, if you're reading, Nora, we appreciate what you did, now don't do it again! Eve and Roarke are an institution. Let's keep them that way! ;o)

Book Review: Innocent In Death is worth the wait!
Summary: 5 Stars

I love Nora Roberts work and as always i was not disappointed the only thing about it that brought me down was knowing that i was going to come to the end of the book. It had everything i look for in a book romance characters you fall in love with and lots and lots of mystery. the world she created in these books is one i wish existed. I fully and completely recommend this book for anyone who wants to be swept away by a good story.

Book Review: Innocent in Death
Summary: 5 Stars

Lt. Eve Dallas and her partner Detective Delia Peabody are called on-scene to investigate the death of a teacher at one of NYC's top private schools. Craig Foster was a popular history teacher who died from drinking poisoned cocoa. Since Foster brought the cocoa from home, Dallas and Peabody initially suspect his wife or a family member. But there are no red flags there, so they move on to the parents of Foster's students or one of his colleagues. They hone in on another teacher, one known for his sexual promiscuousness and who Foster had had words with over his harassment of a school employee. Before they can investigate this man further, his body is discovered in the school's pool. Dallas and Peabody are baffled but convinced more than ever that someone connected with the school is behind the murders.

For the first time, Eve is having a hard time concentrating on an investigation. A woman from Roarke's past has entered the picture, and it isn't long before there's tension between Eve and Roarke and harsh words spoken. Stoic Eve is startled to find herself so emotionally overwrought by this woman and her efforts to create conflict between Eve and Roarke. But she forces her mind on the investigation and what she discovers shocks even the jaded Lt. Dallas.

Robb's popular series remains a constant bestseller and it isn't hard to figure out why, with likeable characters and suspenseful plots. The relationship between Dallas and Roarke is a bonus and is explored in-depth in this book. Robb displays talent for drawing the reader into her characters' angst and despair at the disruption in their marriage. Eve's and Roarke's mutual fright over babies is humorous and adds a light note to an otherwise dark mystery.
