Rincewind the 'Wizzard' needs some introduction. He is the only person to successfully graduate from The Unseen University without knowing a single spell. His goal in life is to have enough time to eat potatoes, but he has a habit of going from disaster to disaster. His most significant skill is running away very quickly, frequently in the wrong direction. His best friend is a trunk with a lot of feet.
When a summary note from the Counterweight Continent arrives at the College demanding a 'Great Wizzard' in no uncertain terms Dean Ridcully senses right away that Rincewind would be perfect for the job. Rincewind is plucked from being stranded on a desert island with a group of beautiful women in order to be stuffed into a spell and fired full tilt into a land that bears a curious resemblance to China (when it doesn't resemble pre-revolutionary Europe, or any other place where there are emperors, grand viziers, and an inordinate amount of plotting.
Rincewind first lands in the lap of Cohen the Barbarian, flees, then encounters revolutionaries, and flees, and then meets of with Lord Hong the vizier, and flees, and flees, and flees. Our not quite sorcerer is bravest when he is trying to escape. This time he will have to create total political mayhem to do so, and woe be to those who get in his way. For all the oriental sarcasms there are moments when you may suspect that Terry Pratchett is lampooning revolutions everywhere, and you wouldn't be far from right.
The Rincewind stories are my least favorites of the Discworld series. Don't take this as a major criticism. The stories follow a particular pattern (thorough incompetent accidentally does something right) that lends itself mostly to burlesque and pratfalls. Now Pratchett does this very well, but for low comedy I prefer his witch stories. And what I really prefer over all is those times when he writes something like Small Gods, which simply transcends all genre.
If you've accidentally read The Last Continent before this and wondered how Rincewind wound up there, this is the book that solves that mystery. If you are looking for a nice bit of slap and tickle Interesting Times will please you no end. With or without the potatoes.
