Book Reviews of Interpreter of Maladies (Edition 001)

Book Review: The best collection of short stories I have ever read.
Summary: 5 Stars

Jhumpa Lahiri makes writing seem so easy. The words just flow from the page, hugely descriptive yet not painfully so. The plots are intricately weaved and each story is a success. This book, which was published in paperback, is the winner of the Pulitzer Prize, the equivalent of a film going straight to video and winning an Oscar. While the stories all have an immigrant focus, they will appeal to anyone who enjoys quality writing. A must have. Tell all your friends.

Book Review: Captures the spirit of Indian people
Summary: 4 Stars

Superb book, that is moody and sensual. It conveys the issues surrounding the lives of Indian people living inside and outside of their native country. I am married to an Indian woman and this book so much encapsulates the attititudes of different layers of the Indian population

Book Review: Gentle, warm, unsure yet optimistic
Summary: 5 Stars

Refreshingly filling collection of short stories. One of the above descriptions describes the characters as being "in exile". This is a glass half empty/full deal. Are they exiled from their homeland or immigrants to the new world. These are the experiences not just of Indians in America but also Italians, Chinese, Jews worldwide. Lahiri's book resonates with equal measures of wisdom and wide-eyed wonder on human subjects such as loss, infidelity, arranged marriage and single parenting. In Lahiri's worlds life is not about getting answers, it is experiential and always hopeful.

Book Review: stunning
Summary: 5 Stars

Skillful, funny, enlightening. Despite an MA in South Asian Literature, this is easily one of the best books I've ever read. I wish I was Jhumpa Lahiri.

Book Review: Couldnt put the book down
Summary: 5 Stars

There are many Indo-American books currently doing the rounds and I have probably read most of these. This book is one of the best. I stayed up many a night to read this book. The stories are beautifully told. Often, the stories would end quite abruptly and there was no happy ending or at least the hope of one - but then that is life. Excellent writing!
