Book Review: Outstanding Short Stories!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is an excellent book of short stories by Jhumpa Lahiri. I like the imagery created in each of the stories and the flow of the words. The setting in "When Mr. Pirzada Came to Dine" reminds me of several college students attending school in America. Their situations were always a little different. The short story of the same name as the book, "Interpreter of Maladies" is most interesting. Mr. Kapasi was quite a fellow with his imagination and plotting. Likewise, Mrs. Das had her flair for secrecy and passionate desires. "This Blessed House" shows the continual controversy between individuals of different religious beliefs and how they are able to live under the same roof. The entire book is a real treat to read. I have enjoyed all the stories. Additionally, I have listened to the digital audio book and it's also wonderful. I would recommend this book to my friends. Other great books to read are: "Trilogy Moments for the Mind, Body and Soul" with the new Epulaeryu poetry form; "Everyday Miracles" by Margaret Okubo; and, "The Language of Poetry Forms" by Tree Good.

Book Review: The woman reading these CDs is atrocious
Summary: 1 Stars

I enjoyed the book when I read it but I deeply dislike this audio CD version, mainly because of the woman reading it. Specifically:
- she destroys a lot of indian words. For e.g., she calls the Indian writer Tagore, "Tagor-e" & she misprounounced Benarasi saris (saris from the city of Benaras) as Bensari. This shows no preparation or passion for her job.
- Her attempts at mimicking accents are woeful. She ended up sounding like someone from Africa when she tried to do an Indian accent. Further, she makes a British accent sound American!
It is pretty obvious that the producers were cheapskates and got someone that didn't charge a lot. They should've gotten the author or an Indian born in the US to read this book.

Save yourself some time. Go read the book yourself.

Book Review: lovely collection of shorts
Summary: 4 Stars

Interpreter of Maladies
Great collection of shorts that seem interconnected and complete within themselves.

Book Review: Get this book!
Summary: 5 Stars

I had not been a fan of short stories until this book. I love to get caught up with the characters and loose myself in the story and I felt you couldn't do that with a short story. As soon as it started getting good,it was over and I always felt deprieved and was left wanting more. I heard one of the stories in this book on NPR while driving in my car and it changed my entire view on short stories. When the story started (not sure of the name, the one about the newlywed couple finding all of the Christian artifacts in their new home), I was on my way to the grocery store and ended up sitting in my car for 40 minutes so that I could listen to the whole thing. It was so moving! I was immeditly captured. The story was so detailed and descriptive. She tells you exactally what the characters are feeling and I easily related and wanted to hear more. When the story was over, I sat in awe. Though it was a short story, it went full circle. I found the story to be very touching and I thought about it many times throughout the next week. I had a roadtrip coming up so I downloaded the rest of the stories and listened to them while driving. I found the others to be just as moving as the first. Filled with emotion, heart-felt and also very real. I truly love her writing sytle. When I was finished with all the stories I was left with a wanting, but not from the stories I had just finished, but a wanting for more stories from the author.

Book Review: Our book club loved this book
Summary: 5 Stars

Our book club loved this book. We enjoyed comparing the emotions evoked by each individual story and how the stories crossed cultures. Our hostess was very thorough and served Indian foods for an authentic atmosphere. We each had a different favorite story. Some of us read the book sequentially, others picked short stories randomly. We would recommend jotting down your thoughts after each story if you are planning a discussion.
