Book Review: Would recommend as a YA title
Summary: 3 Stars
Of all of the books in the "Phantom of the Opera" genre that I have read thus far, this is the first one that I could recommend without reservation to young adults. It has none of the "lusty" scenes so many of these books contain. Don't get me wrong, I do not have a problem with such scenes. But from the point of view of a school librarian, this is a title about which parents of school age children do not have to be concerned.
This time around, Erik rescues a young girl from a brutal life on the streets. When he discovers her remarkable musical talent, he begins to take an interest in life again, which leads to some interesting situations, with Russians and a Fagin-like character.
There is not much of a romance in this story, and I felt that the characters and plot line could have been fleshed out a bit more. Despite this, it was an interesting story that most readers will probably enjoy.
