Book Reviews of Introduction to Dog CareBook Review: Dog Owner's Must Have....More Than An Introduction Summary: 5 StarsThis review refers to "An Introduction To Dog Care" by Dr. Serena Brownlie..(Hardcover/Chartwell Books)
Although this book is titled as an introduction to dog care, it goes much further than that. Even if you have had man's best friend in your life for a while, you will find some very useful information here. Whether your kids have been bugging you for a dog, you are looking for a companion, or you are interested in breeding, showing, or you need to care for a sick or injured dog, you'll find it all here.
The first few chapters, are for the new dog owner. This will be a great help for kids learning how important it is to take proper care of, and the commitiment it will take to raise their new buddy.
In the Introduction you'll read about "A New Memeber of the Household" Probably a good section to read with the kids before the dog even arrives.
"Acquiring Your Dog", goes into the personalities and specific needs of different breeds. Many breeds are looked at, and this chapter will be a big help in determining which breed and size is right for your family.
"Finding and Choosing Your Puppy".. From finding a Pedigree Puppy, to taking on an older dog, you'll find some real good advice here.
"Caring For Your Puppy"..making your new dog feel comfortable in his new home is important. Food, a schedule, house training, vaccinations, etc. are all covered here.
The next two chapters deal with the older dog. "The Growning Dog", "The Adult Dog", are both devoted to their needs. Traveling, Exercise, Neutering, Feeding, Body Language, Grooming, are just a few of the valuable tips here.
"Breeding", "Showing", Caring for a "Sick or Injured Dog", "The Old Dog", cover all the basics for these subjects. You'll even find some advice on how to handle loosing your buddy.
Dr. Serena Brownlie has done a thorough job. The book has over 120 pages packed full of useful and valuable information. There are many wonderful pictures, not just of the dogs, but also showing instruction in some areas. The book is printed on quality paper, I've had this book for many years and it has held up quite well. You may also want to supplement this book, with a more updated book, as of course there have been some advances over the years. For example, identification here talks about tags, my son's dog, now has a chip implanted, so she may always be returned to her owner. There is also a very nice index, in case you are looking for something specific.
Not only will this book provide you with the help you need to raise your dog, but it will also provide some quality time, as you go through it with your kids. I don't see any available directly from Amazon, but I see some pretty good deals from the outside merchants at this time. If you love dogs, grab one up, it is a refrence book, you will turn to often.
4 paws up from my dog "Shadow"!
