Book Review: A big disappointment after Singularity Sky
Summary: 3 Stars
I was expecting something on par with Singularity Sky (which is 5 star plus in my book), or may be a slight let down (this is a sequel after all), but the reality is this book is no where near as good as its predecessor. It started fine, with a star goes nova, and we're introduced to some interesting ways to do Mutually Assured Destruction in an interstellar age. A big plus is we finally got to see what Rachel did for a living: Defuse nukes built by your everyday nutcase. However, the book goes down after that, with the introduction of the main villain: the ReMastered, who are not nearly as interesting as the New Republic. The book goes on without any new ideas for quite a while until the bad guys hijacked the ship Rachel is on, and I was hoping we can see some innovative use of a military cornucopia like last time, how wrong I was. Rachel is herded away without any resistance (what happened to our heroine who fight her way through a battleship to save her lover?), and the machine is left to a trainee officer of a star liner who promptly asked it for guns, more guns, how unoriginal. By this time the book is near its end and I know it's a lost cause.
