Book Review: Discovering a remarkable woman's travels in a wild land.

If you have any preconceived ideas about the nature of Victorian women, prepare to shed them now! Isabella Bird's account of her travels in the Rocky Mountains during the last decades of the 19th Century will make you reconsider not only your perception of the Victorian lady but whether your own experiences of journeys abroad can really be described as 'travelling'. Isabella describes, in letters to her sister, how she makes her way on horseback through the 'enspiriting' landscapes of Colorado; how she deals with extreme weather; how she endures solitariness, frostbite, lack of food, and the interest of bears, wolves and the occasional 'desperado'. These letters are filled with the voice of a woman who is thrilled and enraptured by everything and everyone that she meets. She earns not only the respect but the admiration of men who, in any other situation would probably either kill or rape an unaccompanied female. Her prose is delightfully enthusiastic and redolent with the most deliciously accurate descriptions. The letters are brief and digestible and almost designed for reading aloud - the perfect accompaniment to winter evenings spent by the fire when the television can only summon up the repeats of the last five years. Isabella will provide better pictures for the mind and imagination which can be revisited at your leisure for as long as her book remains in its rightful place on your list of favourite reads.
