Lance Armstrong's autobiography is a captivating account of a top professional cyclist's descent into cancer, of the trauma of his treatment and his agonising but ultimately trimphant return to cycling. I know of no other book that better reflects the value of sporting endeavour. This book will be of huge interest to anyone interested in sport, whether or not they have the slightest understanding of pro cycling. The fact that Lance was a World Champion before he contracted cancer and underwent brain surgery makes our reading of his treatment all the more harrowing. To observe that moment of realisation of his situation, to read how his sponsors and fellow professionals responded, is very emotional. And the final chapters of the book, the difficulties of making a comeback once chemo had stripped his body of all its muscle, are uplifting. Check out his website also.
