Book Reviews of Jacob Have I Loved

Book Review: An adult review
Summary: 5 Stars

This book focuses on a young tomboy named Louise, who grows up on a small island in the US named Rass in the WWII era. No matter how hard se works to be the good daughter her sister still shines brighter her. You follow Louise's life as she grows up, losing her hard earned crabbing money to her sister, her parents praise, her cosmetics, and eventualy her closest friend who is a boy. Is their anything her sister won't take? Yes. Louises determination to grow up.

This is a great book I read it when I was 12, agian when I was 16, and at 22 I finaly bought it and read it agian. Anything Katherine Paterson writes will leave the reader touched and knowing they are not alone in the trials of life.

Book Review: An incredible story for any age.
Summary: 5 Stars

This book has broken my heart and then put the pieces back together so gently I didn't even realize it was mended.

It was difficult for me to get into the beginning of Jacob Have I Loved. I thought I had read it before but it turned out to be a different book than I thought so I didn't know what to expect. Then, I kept waiting for Jacob to appear. Who was he? What was his story?

Finally, about 50 pages in, I let go of waiting for Jacob and just fell into the story. I couldn't put it down after that. The story grabbed me and wouldn't let go. Then, it began shaving off pieces of my heart until it finally shattered what was left with one quick moment.

I knew it was coming. I could feel it about to happen. Well, I could feel the build-up that something was going down but at first I didn't know if it was going to be good or bad. I just knew it was big. Then, I knew it was bad. I could see what was going to happen but she didn't know yet. I wanted to shake her "don't you know what is going to come next?" Then, she knew, and I was heartbroken. I didn't know if we would ever recover but by the end of the book I was yelling "don't forget the first one." And after all that I closed the book with a smile on my face.

I love Louise and though she lived a very different life from me, so much of her felt familiar. Oh Jacob Have I Loved, how I have loved you.

Book Review: Awesome.. just Awesome
Summary: 5 Stars

This has been one of my favorite books since I was 11 and I am now 19. I make sure i read it yearly and it still touches me deeply. I would recomend it to anyone. I really think it shows that the odd one out always has a chance to make it much further. Just a beautiful book.

Book Review: Banned?
Summary: 4 Stars

I read this book as part of an assignment on banned books in a Children's Literature class at West Virginia State College. I don't know why it is on some banned lists. I think it is a wonderful story - it is not one that I would keep from my students. It would be great for a yound lady that thinks she is alone and misunderstood to read this book. Jacob Have I Loved is a very heartwarming story.

Book Review: Bitter Sibling Rivalry
Summary: 2 Stars

I read this book because it was a Newberry Winner, but I really didn't enjoy it. The description of the fishing village was informational, and the setting was charming, but what ruined the book for me was the bitterness of the main character. What happens in life is often unfair, but learn to forgive and move forward. The main character's conflict is only partially resolved by her decision to never neglect a child in the way in which she was neglected. I ended up disliking the two sisters for different reasons. For a milder example of sibling rivalry read The Little House on the Prairie Series.
