Book Reviews of Jacob Have I LovedBook Review: GREAT Summary: 5 Stars
'Jacob have I loved, but Eseau have I hated'. Sara Louise a.k.a. Wheezie looks at herself as Eseau, and her younger twin sister Caroline as Jacob. Caroline was born a couple of minutes after Wheezie, and has taken everything from her. Caroline gets special treatment from her parents and Grandma, everyone worries about her, she gets the chance of the schooling that Wheezie has always dreamed of, and makes Wheezie feal inferior. However, lfe on Rass Island for Sara Louise is still bearable; she has a very special frind (even though the 2 are complete opposites), Call. But when Caroline steals even that from Wheezie, she feals it's time to move on... This is a wonderful book and i recomend anyone should read it, though it's really sad (i cry in at least 5 spots every time).
Book Review: Good Ending Summary: 5 Stars
I found the beginning of the book to be a little boring. Which is probably because I did not understand some of the terms related to fishing; especially since I am not from a small fishing island. Yet I also understand that an author needs to develop the setting of a story so the reader has some sort of background of where the characters are from.
However as the book went on I found it to be more entertaining, especially when I got to the parts about the manner in which Sara Louise describes her sister. My heart did go out to Sara Louise because I felt bad for her, because she was not recognized for what she could do.
At the end of the book I did find closure, which is something I need at the end of a book. The reason I need it is because then I feel like I truly finished the story and feel relieved. The book definitely had a good ending and it tells what happens to everyone. I know closure is a big deal to me so I figured it might be for other readers as well.
Book Review: Got lost in the pages... Summary: 5 Stars
I read this book several times between 4th and 6th grade. I loved the words and the images-they were put together like magic. I am now 30 and still get excited when I see this book pop up on children's reading lists, because I hope that others will feel the same drawing in that I experienced. I recommend this book highly.
Book Review: Great Read Even for Adults Summary: 5 Stars
I have taken to reading my children's books in these tough economic times and was glad to find this one. Paterson gets at the agony of adolescence in a way that brought long forgotten tears several times as I read. Her description of both the Bay and Appalachia is such that I can see them clearly in my mind. She creates several strong characters, most especially Sara Louise. She does not shy away from the realities of life, rather, she witnesses to them. As a Presbyterian minister I appreciate Paterson's responsible use of scripture in this story. As a high school teacher I can see her young characters every day in my classes. You will find here a story of redemption as old as the Bible. Don't leave it just for your kids to read.
Book Review: How Young adult fiction should be!!!! Summary: 5 Stars
This is the first book I have read by Katherine Paterson but it won't be my last.
This is a great book for anyone who enjoys good writing and has ever found themselves outside of the spotlight. Paterson's writing style is hyptnotic. I felt like I was on the small island off the Maryland coast. She describes the scenery so well I swear at times I thought I could smell the salt in the air.
Her characters all to familiar to most readers, especially those with syblings. "Weeze" is such a compassionate character I could not help but feel bad for her, then root for her to stand up and make something of her life.
It would have been an easy temptation for Paterson to paint the other sister, Caroline, in a bad way so as to hate her like Louise did. But instead she shows the sweet personality of the younger sister in a way that I never felt bad feelings for her, yet I totally empathized with Weeze. That's something that's not easy for a writer to accomplish but Paterson does it with ease.
The title is so clever as it weaves it's way through the book coming full circle in the last chapter.
I love this book, and would encourage anyone who loves fiction to pick it up. This is how young-adult fiction should be!
