Book Reviews of Jane Eyre (Bantam Classics)Book Review: A DEFFINATE MUST BUY Summary: 4 StarsJane Eyre is one of the most intriging(as well as one of the longest)books I have ever read. To be honest I didn't particually want to read it at first. We were on holliday in Spain and we were at the beach. I couldn't go swimming because of a broken arm so I bought the only English book in the local bookshop. I found the opening chapters of child abuse very sad but interesting. Then when orphaned Jane Eyre left Gateshead and went to Lowood bording school, the book became less interesting until she met her friend. Then her friend died and Jane grew up and became the govorness to a French girl at the large home of Mr.Rochester.Once Jane falls in love with him the plot becomes very predictable but becomes brilliant when the insane woman enters the book and even more so when her identity is revealled by Edward Rochester. Jane Eyre is a very well thought out love story but is not a "Lovey Dovey" story. I do think that Charlotte Bronte did carry the book on a bit to long because in certain chapters you find your mind wandering almost as far as the plot. Overall I think if you are not used to reading Victorian style books with Victorian wording then you will be dissapointed with Jane Eyre.
Book Review: The best read, with a fantastic introduction! Summary: 4 StarsJane Eyre is a fantastic book, full of passion and rage. The intense story concerns a plain, downtrodden little orphan who treads into the world with little but her own spirit, and has to defy strict moral convention and gain full independence to lead a happy life. After searching libraries and bookshops everywhere for various copies of Jane Eyre, this is the one with the best introduction. It gives a fantastic insight into the feminist issues of the book, and gives a very powerful view of Jane. I read the book in a new light! Unfortunately, I don't recall there being notes in the back, which is the only down-point. I'm not sure if the lack of notes and rather specific introduction are ideal for studying the book in a general sense, but it is ideal for those wishing to read it with a feminist viewpoint.
Book Review: Reader, I wish... Summary: 5 StarsWhile teaching Shakespeare, Dickens, Hardy and Joyce to an all female class, I was asked about my opinion of JE: I replied, guiltily, that I hadn't actually read it. The book duly arrived as an end of term present. Having finally got around to reading it I am grateful. Jane is a wonderfully complex and engaging narrator, who never quite fits into the easily assignable categories or behaves in the way we expect:she can be obedient without being submissive; assertive without being aggressive. The description of her gradual falling-in-love with Rochester is exquisite and painfully authentic. OK I admit, Reader, I wish I'd married her!
Book Review: One of the greatest love stories of all time Summary: 5 StarsThe classic tale of her growth from child to woman, the story tells of Jane Eyre's discovery of true love and her 'true self'. Written in the mid Nineteenth Century by a then unknown female author, it seethes with surpressed passion and forbidden love. Shuttleworths excellent introduction offers many new ideas on Bronte's novel. A gripping tale of love, cruelty, suspense and the supernatural. A must for all romantics
Book Review: Vivid and brilliant story but some bits are boring Summary: 5 StarsJane Eyre is a compelling life story of (of course) Jane Eyre. It has so many twists, turns and dark secrets that it is difficult to get bored. However it is not impossible, as the book is a slow starter. She starts life unhappily and starts to go to boarding school at around the age of ten. As soon as she finishes her school years, she becomes a governess. She begins to fall in love with her employer and soon after he asks her to marry him she runs away. She stays with her cousins (that fact is unknown to her then) and her cousin (now known as a cousin) asks her to marry him. She says no, and tries to find her employer, Mr Rochester... Charlotte Bronte is a truly great author. By Annabel Edwards. ( age 9 but soon 10)
