Book Review: Great Introduction for Newbies

I needed a book that would explain the important concepts of java, but also introduce them to me from scratch. This book did exactly that. The writing is great, and easily understood, even if java itself seems to give me headaches! There are examples of pretty much everything that is explained, and whenever I had a moment where I looked at a code and said "what is that?" it would be explained a few pages later. All around good book.
The only reason I don't give it five stars is because there were no exercises for the beginner. This is a major oversight since reading about something and understanding it is so different from actually doing it. I had to go to another book for exercises and found they didn't always line up with what I was learning. The explanations themselves, however, were great.
Book Review: Great book for newbies to Java!

This book finally clears up some of the mystery about Object Oriented programming. I came from the old school of procedural programming, and I found Object oriented languages to be more than a bit puzzling. This fine book presents the concepts very clearly with a wry sense of humour. It is easy to read and understand. Dr Burd even sent me the source code for the missing cd! Not many authors answer emails and send source code. Get the book, it is worthwhile. BBBook Review: I'm definitely not a programmer

I enjoy using computers and I am adept at understanding business systems and their applications. I was never good at the programming aspects. This book helped me pass a required Java class. It offered explanations above and beyond those provided by my online classes and text.
If you have to pass a java class or just want to learn Java, I think this book would be a good choice.

I needed to have some JAVA background quite unexpectedly for a class. After checking out a number of the intro JAVA books available and being able to "look inside" this one, I decided to go with this one. The author says from the outset that this is appropriate for someone with no prior programming experience and takes you step by step, and I would say, for the most part, he keeps that in mind.Book Review: Java for Dummies 4 ed.

The book is very organized and easy to follow. The author Dr. Burd answers your email too. I get a damaged CD-Rom and ask for help; Dr Burd email me the codes and bonus chapters within one day.
