Jonah (Jayber) Crow, bachelor barber & sexton of a central Kentucky small town, is a Ulysses who never leaves Ithaca, but like Herman Hesse's Siddhartha, lets the river bring the world to him. A chapter invites comparisons to Dante and Pilgrim's Progress, but the book this most reminds me of is Jean Giono's Joy of Man's Desiring, also edited by Jack Shoemaker. After an epic homeward pilgrimage in a flood, this settles down to be a romans locale, a romance of the homeplace. Membership in the community is explained in terms familiar to readers of St. Paul (members of the body, all are useful) and John Donne (each is a piece of the continent, a part of the main). There's a strange love story, of Mattie's farm, and the man who works it to death. Jayber grieves the loneliness of intimacy's lack and celebrates the infinite gift of life--life shared, at the end, with his silently beloved....
