Jewel had an unhappy childhood. Her parents were separated when she was a child, and when she is a young adolescent, both parents die. Jewel is left with a bitter grandmother, who grows angry when Jewel refuses to bend to her will, and sends her off to boarding school.
When Jewel marries and thinks about starting a family of her own, she is determined that things will be different, and everything goes well as she and her husband add five children to their lives. A woman working for Jewel delivers a prophesy that her sixth and final child will be a test from God, and when the baby is five months old, they are given a diagnosis--Mongolian idiot, the doctors say. The child has Down Syndrome.
From that moment, Jewel's life becomes about fixing this child, to the exclusion of caring for her other children or paying attention to her husband. Everything in Jewel's life is focused only on Brenda Kay and what would be best for her. She recognizes that her other children suffer for this, although they never express resentment of any kind. She realizes that her marriage is slowly dying, but nothing is as important as doing what she wants for Brenda Kay.
I found Jewel's attitudes to be annoying and reading on and on about Jewel's fixation with Brenda Kay and the way she glosses over the rest of her children was tedious. I didn't like Jewel at all, but also felt no sympathy for her husband, Leston. None of the other characters in this story were developed well enough for me to grasp them in any way, which also greatly reduced my possible enjoyment of this novel.
