Is it possible to actually be transformed in time back to 1905 and 1906? The answer is a resounding YES! That is exactly what Darrius Jerome Gourdine does with this masterpiece. You can tell that the subject matter was thoroughly researched and Gourdine presents it in a most commanding manner. As you turn each page, you are actually transformed back in time and able to visualize each scenario and character. You become one with the story. This is a must read for any man aspiring to join Alpha Phi Alpha and also serves as a timely reminder for all Alphas of how we came into being and what we must do to as we have now entered our second century of existence. It would well serve the entire Black Greek community, also, as Alpha served as the role model for which their organizations came into existence.
One always takes pride in the organization(s) to which he/she belongs, but once one has read "JEWELS", that appreciation and pride is taken to a higher level. You might say of course another Alpha would have that opinion but it really does go far beyond that. Reading "JEWELS" ignites a fire and a deeper passion in one and that is easily transferrable to whatever organization(s) one belongs to. "JEWELS" shows what can actually be achieved when there is determination, commitment and a sense of purpose.
