Jogo do Pau is the Portuguese art of stick fighting. While this art can be translated as "Game of the Stick" and certainly has a sporting aspect, Jogo do Pau is also an effective means of personal defense. Author Luis Preto does an excellent job of introducing the reader to this unique art.

The book is also heavily illustrated with numerous photographs demonstrating the techniques of Jogo do Pau.
Whether one can learn a fighting art from a book may be open to debate, but one can certainly learn the basics of Jogo do Pau from this book. Having spent some time studying this book and learning the techniques of Jogo do Pau, I can say that it is quite possible to develop a strong set strikes, blocks, and parries using the traditional 5-foot Jogo do Pau stick or a bit shorter walking stick.
I enjoyed Jogo do Pau both as an introduction to a unique martial art, and as a means of adding to a gentleman's art of defense.
