Book Reviews of John Dies at the EndBook Review: Bought it AFTER I read it Summary: 5 Stars
This book was hilarious! I bought it with the express purpose of loaning it out to people I like and supporting the author in hopes that he finishes the sequel.
The humor in this book was really dark and twisted, which is exactly what made it such a great read. The plot had it's glitches and holes, which I would guess are from an inexperienced writer and probably from writing the story on the fly, but the imagery humor and readability make up for that in spades.
I think David Wong has what it takes to be a great author and I plan to buy whatever he publishes next :)
Book Review: But John...oh, never mind... Summary: 5 Stars
The tone of this book is perfect. The way Wong (author Wong, not character Wong) blends his asides and internal monologues is great. The plot, I thought, could use a little more refining, at times it does read like an internet serial mashed into a book. The scene that stands out in my mind is when David is in the trailer and the soy sauce is trying to get out of the fridge. It was a delicious blend of well executed suspense and humor, which is a challenge to do.
Not perfect, but I loved it, thus I give it five stars.
Book Review: Could not get past the first few chapters Summary: 1 Stars
This book had a writing style that was probably not meant for the older generation. I love SF, but this book was too "incredible" for me.
Book Review: Do not miss this book. Summary: 5 Stars
I read a lot of books. Nearly one wall of my computer room, as well as three other bookshelves in other rooms are completely full of books of every shape, size, and topic. Some of the books, ones that I particularly liked, I have read twice. And a small handful I have maybe read three or four times... The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy springs to mind as one I have read multiple times. That said, I have read John Dies at the End more times than I can remember. Starting years ago with the online version of the book, I am guessing no fewer than eight times, but it could easily be more.
David Wong has created a book that manages to be horrifying and humorous all on the same page... On pretty much every page of the book. He has created characters one moment seem so wild and `out-there' that they could not possibly be real only to later tie everything up and show just how human that character really is. Simply put, John Dies at the End is truly a masterpiece of modern fiction, and one of the best stories ever put to paper.
Book Review: Enjoy the Ride Summary: 4 Stars
Man this book has been given some great reviews and that's what got me to pick this up. There is a free versions that you can read online but I hate reading off computer screens so I just picked up the book edition. I'll just have to say that I'm a huge fan of B-Horror and pretty much bad horror movies in general, what can I say they entertain me with their non-sense and over the top gore. This book kind of reminded me of a bad horror movie. The events in this book are so off the wall that they become entertaining and once mixed in with the authors humor it just becomes a really fun ride. The book is written from the perspective of the narrator telling a story of past events to someone and from time to time we come out of the story to talk with the story teller and his audience. I really didn't know why the author went about this till then end but all in all it worked. The writing was and the story lacked in a few places but it was just so fun all around that I can't fault it too much. I do wish there was more of the "soy sauce" side effects in this book but I still liked they way the plot went. Good book for readers of horror.
