Book Reviews of Journey Of The Mask

Book Review: A Story of Redemption
Summary: 4 Stars

"Erik is dead." With this statement, Nancy Hill Pettengill begins her story where Leroux's story ends.

Having promised to bury her former mentor upon the publication of his death, Christine flees from the overly protective arms of her childhood friend, Raoul, to honor her Angel's last request.

But her Angel has other plans. Erik is NOT dead. Tiring of the growing rivalry between himself and the Vicomte de Chagny, Erik realized that if he removed Raoul from their lives it would devastate Christine, and she may never forgive him for it. So he decides to remove himself and Christine instead. Thus, begins The Journey of The Mask. Erik and Christine begin a new life together - and things, at first, are pretty rocky when Christine realizes that she's been abducted once again by her teacher. But gradually, she begins to see Erik for himself, Erik as he is behind the façade of his mask and behind the horror of his face, and she comes to realize that she loves him more than anything.

Their new life, however, is not a fairy-tale come true. For Erik had lived a wicked, desperate life before the years he'd spent at the opera house, and that life comes back to haunt him in a horrific way. Their physical journey to a new land, and their emotional journey to hell and back, is the sole basis of Ms. Pettengill's book.

The book is written in the first person from Erik's POV, with the final chapter from Christine's POV. Speaking for myself, I had a hard time putting the book down, even at those points in the story (only a minor few) where I felt something didn't quite fit or didn't quite make sense. But as a whole, the book is a fascinating read for those who love E/C fics. However, if you're a Raoul fan, you may not care too much for this one, as Raoul is depicted only in the very beginning and in the very end of the book.

As a whole, I like the story - but there were a few things that I, personally, didn't like; one of them being how much the Lord's name was used in vain. I really despise seeing that anywhere; it's so unnecessary and highly irreverent. Throughout the book, Erik is plagued with a strange malady that the reader will realize from the very beginning are the signs of heart trouble or heart attack. For all of Erik's skill, knowledge of medicine, and book learning, he has no idea what's happening to him.

But, in the end, I felt that the book came full circle and did justice to both Christine and Erik. Christine matures and stays with Erik through thick and thin. Erik learns to let go of his past but only after losing something very dear to him. And what Christine does for Erik at the very end of the book was, to me, so poignant and beautiful that it made up for those things that I didn't like about the book. It was also something that I'd never seen in any other Phantom book or phanphic, for that matter. It also helped when Erik admits towards the end of the book: "Through the love of my wife, [God's] hand has finally touched me and I feel its warmth upon my shoulder...."

All in all, I like the book and will add it to the shelf with my Phavorite Phantom books.

I shall end this review with Ms. Pettengill's version of Erik's own words: "....perhaps our troubles were a necessary part of our journey, a journey upon which we embarked together, to help us both discover the true meaning of love. But, most importantly, it has been my own personal journey - a journey of the mask."
