Book Review: Anecdotal At Best

I was rather disappointed by Freeman's Caesar. In the prologue Mr. Freeman states that the book developed out of a series of lectures and that is what the book feels and reads like. There was very little new information about Caesar. This book is anecdotal at best. Over 200 pages go by before Mark Antony, Caesar's most trusted lieutenant, is even mentioned and then almost in passing. There was no indication as to why Caesar was Caesar, just a collection of stories that could be found in any second rate History Channel documentary. I learned more about Caesar from the special features in HBO's "Rome" than I did from this book.
