Book Reviews of Jurassic Park

Book Review: A great work of fantasy
Summary: 5 Stars

Michael Crichton's book Jurassic Park was a truley great read. The imagery and character development were on par with some of his best stuff, The Andromeda Strain being a good example. The hero's and villians were easy to distinguish, the science explained in language that didn't "dumb it down" nor was it impossible for the lay person to understand. Fast paced and exciting, Jurassic Park should be on everyones "must read" list for Fantasy/Science Fiction.

Where I'm disapointed is the movie. Crichton authored the screen play and Maria Scotch Marmo did the re-write. Didn't Crichton have any say as to what they could do to his work? There are so many important differences between the 2 works that it ends up almost being 2 different stories being told. If you saw the movie first perhaps it's not so bad, but if you read the book first, as I did, the movie is a real disapointment. This is just a continuation of a trend that really upsets me. Those of us that actually read are so often disapointed in film adaptations that many of us refuse to go to movies made from our favorite books.

Book Review: A heart-pounding adrenaline rush in a paperback form
Summary: 5 Stars

A selection of experts has been collected by InGen to look around a new amusement park. This park is different, InGen has created an amusement park that is populated by dinosaurs. The panel of experts is there to decide if the park is safe, because there have been accidents - fatal ones. Dr. Ian Malcolm warns them that despite all their safeguards, the park will not work, that chaos will win. When he is proved right, no one is prepared for the danger that is about to be set loose on a bunch of scientists, and two kids spending time with their grandfather.

I read this book just after "The Lost World" was released because I had been told how different it was from the movie. I am glad I waited because the book deserves to be read on its own instead of being compared to the movie the whole time. I can not get over how well written this book is - but then almost all of Michael Crichton's books are exceptional. If they had followed the book more closely for the movie then I think that the movie would have been even creepier - but then they ended up using a lot of the ideas in the movie "The Lost World".

The characters in this book will make you either love them or hate them - and the poetic justice at the end of the novel was a nice touch on Michael's part. You have got to read this book -even if you have seen the movie - because the book blows the movie totally out of the water.

Book Review: A mixed review
Summary: 4 Stars

Jurassic Park has breathtaking action, detail and characters. I would give it 5 stars except for one drawback. The book is kind of bogged down with Malcom's speeches about chaos theory but moreover his endless lectures about how much he hates the human race and how terrible we are. Jurassic Park is 3/4 action novel the other 1/4 is Malcom's jabbering. Fortunately if you can look past this small problem the book is great. ...

Book Review: A modern parable with surprising depth
Summary: 5 Stars

Anyone who enjoys books filled with suspense, and has had some past aspirations for working with large, unpredictable animals should definitely read this book. It opens up a world of twisted imagination and offers the reader vivid characters who provide witty and often meaningful dialogue. For those who desire a quick fix of fear, yet also yearn for the powerful characteristics of a masterpiece, Jurassic Park is the book for you.

Book Review: A modern sci-fi classic
Summary: 5 Stars

This is one of the best books I ever read. My first taste of it was about two months after the movie came out. While the movie is quite an achievement, the book is far better. The actions scenes are nonstop and the science in the book is astonishing. The nature of each character is much deeping than the movie, expecially Ian Malcolm. If you thought the T-Rex scene was great in the movie, there are far greater ones in the book, including a chase in the jungle river. Crichton's no-nonsense style grabs you in the first page and never let you go. A must read for sci-fi fans.
