Book Reviews of Kane and AbelBook Review: 540 Pages of Excellence Summary: 5 Stars
I was introduced to KANE AND ABEL when my father, annoyed with the fact that I only read quick fantasy even though my reading ability was far beyond that, drove me to the local library and heaved a load of his favorite books into my arms. Among these books were Tai-Pan (by James Clavell), Shogun (also by James Clavell), Lonesome Dove (by Larry McMurtry) and, of course, KANE AND ABEL. I had looked at the plastic peeling off of the hardcovers and loose pages hanging by threads, rolled my eyes like a typical teenager, and resumed reading my current fantasy novel that I had read about twenty times already. The next day, I had finished my book and was desperate for another. KANE AND ABEL caught my eye and, only out of respect for my father, I picked it up and started reading. Within ten minutes I was hooked.
KANE AND ABEL snatches you from the start with two births in April 18th, 1906. One is in an expensive, professional hospital, and we are introduced to William Kane, the son of a millionaire banker in Boston. The other is in a forest in Poland, where a young hunter finds a woman giving birth. She is dead, but the baby is alive. Thus we say hello to Wladek Koskiewicz, who will later become Abel Rosnovski. One born in wealth, one born in poverty, but the same in skill and ambition.
The book continues with the lives of the two intelligent men. Archer switches back and forth between their two lives, but his skill and writing style makes it impossible to get confused between the two. Kane looses his father and follows in his banker footsteps while Abel is sent to a labor camp by invading Soviet forces. Abel escapes and immigrates to New York. Kane graduates from Harvard and becomes an impressive banker, and Abel becomes the head of a vast hotel chain. The two men grow to hate each other as their ambition increases. Jeffrey Archer throws in a twist at the end that results in an unbelievable ending.
It is difficult to tell the complete lives of two men (fictional, but still) in one book and still keep the reader interested. Yet Mr. Archer manages to do just that. He tells you both sides of the story fairly and unbiased, making it difficult to choose a character to root for. This thrilling novel has so many twists and turns that, written differently, might make one lost. But Jeffrey Archer is able to tell a brilliant and interesting story, keeping the reader on their toes until the five-hundreth and fortieth page.
