Book Review: A Must For Your Collection

Being a native of West Virginia, Diane Gilliam Fisher has captured an anthology of interwoven voices that tell the heart-wrenching tale of coal mining. The poems are simple yet may be discussed at a much deeper level. I share these poems with my students. They love hearing these unique voices and their minds are opened up to the world of Appalachia that most people forget about. The "characters" from the poems were pulled from local stories, local legend and real diary accounts, letters, and songs that she was able to research. These poems were real, living humans at one time. For the reader, for the teacher; it is a great anthology of "life" to share with others. She has an amazing power to her small, subtle voice. I only wish that the book had an audio cd of her readings. The words on printed page alone are a truly remarkable experience.
