Book Reviews of Killing Club, The

Book Review: Great Plot, Not as Great Execution as Hoped
Summary: 3 Stars

Kathy Brier (writing as Marcie Walsh for some reason) and Michael Malone have come up with a pretty interesting idea for a story. A group of 12 unpopular New Jersey high school kids would hang out in an abandoned warehouse thinking up and writing down interesting ways they would murder their tormentors (teachers, popular kids, parents well everyone other than them really). They decided to call a halt to this practice when one of them committed suicide. Now more than a decade later members of The Killing Club are highly successful in their small town community, some have even moved away but one day they start turning up dead, murdered in ways which seem to be carbon copies of entries they wrote in the 'Death Book'. One of these former members, Detective Sergeant Jamie Ferrara has to firstly convince her colleagues, boyfriend boss, as well as the other members of the former The Killing Club, that there is a killer targeting them and then work out who the killer is before there are no more members left.

Sounds like a great story yes, and it will pass the time but it does drag on in parts and the characters aren't written well enough that you feel for them or care about them at all especially the lead character Detective Sergeant Jamie Ferrara. Dating her boss, Danny/Donny and other aspects really weren't needed for the story to flow and these factors played no major part in the story other than making it more unbelievable, complicated and boring at times. I also don't really understand why the main author Kathy Brier is writing under a pen name for anonymity when she sticks a huge portrait photograph of herself on the back cover. If you can get a copy from the library and there's nothing else around to read give it a look but there are a lot better novels out their. Read Hindsight by Barbara Rogan for a great serial killing class reunion thriller instead.

Book Review: A Good Mystery
Summary: 3 Stars

The wording didn't flow for me, I found myself re-reading sentences over again, it was the phrasing perhaps. It started out at a good pace..it died between the first and second murder though. I think if it was going to lose readers, this is where it would be.

I hung in there and it did pick up and it was a good story line, just needed better plotting/pacing of the action. There should have been some tension...is Jamie is trouble..is the person she with or talking openly with the killer? Didn't really think it needed the mention of the Danny/Donny -who is who -in this particular story line, seemed tossed in there like a fun fact. On a mom-scale, I rate this read PG13 for sexual content.

Book Review: Mysterious Murder
Summary: 5 Stars

The Killing Club is a magnificent book to read. It has wonderful murder mysteries and you can not believe who is the killer! If you like mysterious books I suggest you deffinitly read this book. You should only read this book if you are 11 or older.

Book Review: A Fun Read, Whether You're A Soap Fan or Not...
Summary: 5 Stars

First, let me say I am a lifelong OLTL fan. Been watching the show since I was old enough to understand the concept of TV. I'm also a huge Michael Malone fan, so, when this book came about, I was very excited.

I wasn't disappointed once I started reading. Much like in his previous works, Malone crafts a very suspenseful tale amongst a group of characters, each with their own back story (and quirks). Everything fits together nicely, like a well-crafted puzzle, and the plot itself moves along at a very enjoyable pace.

I must admit I was afraid this would be something one could only understand and enjoy if they were following the Killing Club storyline on One Life to Live. However, those fears were extinguished as I read on. This book has a life of its own.

If you're a fan of mystery, you'll like this. If you're a OLTL fan, you'll likes this. Heck, if you simply like an engrossing story with lots of twists and turns, you'll like this. I recommend it to readers everywhere.

Book Review: Poorly Written & Boring
Summary: 1 Stars

The only reason I finished this book was to discover who the killer was, but I skipped through most of it. The plot moves too slowly; after the first killing, the second one takes too long to occur. The characters are not all that likable and not very interesting so you really don't care if they are killed or not. The crime scenes are not very descriptive and it is evident that the author knows nothing about being a detective. As others have mentioned, the writing style is something that a middle school student could have written. The ending is boring, too.
