Book Review: Haggard's Best

I'm surprised to see only one review of such an excellent book. Rider Haggard's works of adventure are some of the best ever and indeed, King Solomon's Mines may well be his very best. Instead of repeating the plot I would like to make a few points about the writer's work in general:
Although more sympathetic than most writers of his age, the white, English male is certainly viewed as superior to the rest of humanity, indeed even over the white, English female. The point is not belabored though and is just something one gets with a book published in 1885. In fact, individual native Africans are viewed positively in this first person narrative and a deep friendship develops between our hero and an African warrior.
The 'Lost World' is also a staple of the genre, and Haggard uses it well. Several writers, most notably Edgar Rice Burroughs, were influenced by the author so if you like Burroughs you'll like Haggard. For that matter, if you like Indiana Jones you will like this book as Jones was certainly cut from the same cloth as Quatermain. In short, high adventure, lost worlds, awesome warriors and cliffhanger escapes - great stuff!
