Book Reviews of Kiss and Tango: Looking for Love in Buenos Aires

Book Review: Claptrap
Summary: 1 Stars

This book does not deserve a review, but as a lover of Tango (and books), I have to say that it is truly an amazing self centered piece of work. Tango takes all of life, the old, the new, the lovely, the ugly, and makes them all a part of a beautiful artform. The word "I" is used so many times, repeated endlessly....not in the spirit of Tango-mind, which is like a spiritual practice as well as a dance form. It is time for a good book about the adventure of Tango, a work of a real writer, not this spoiled person. How on earth do these things get published?

Book Review: Kiss and Tango : Looking for Love in Buenos Aires
Summary: 1 Stars

Being a Milonguero, I feel fortunate not to have experienced Marina Palmer's Tango community neither here in the States or in Buenos Aires.
Having read this book, I don't believe it is a book about the beautiful music and dance of Argentine Tango. It is more about Marina relating her many sexual conquests and using Tango as the vehicle to get there. I am surprised that she is surprised Argentine men don't consider her marriage material.
I give the book 1/2 star as it includes references to Di Sarli, Carlos Gardel, Confertia Ideal and the Glorieta.
Years back Harper Collins if they would have published this book, it would have been in paperback.

Book Review: Quite entertaining!
Summary: 4 Stars

Marina Palmer's "Kiss and Tango: Looking for Love in Buenos Aires" began when the author visited her family members in Buenos Aires and was introduced to tango. She was captivated by the dance as well as the passion that she saw between the dancers and when she returned to New York City, she began taking tango dancing lessons from three different instructors. What started as a curiousity turned into an obsession and soon, she left her well paid position and moved to Buenos Aires with the generous financial support of her father. Soon, Marina began leading the lifestyle of a tango dancer; waking up at 2pm in the afternoon, dancing in various clubs, meeting different people, sleeping with some of the men she met.

I thought this was an interesting and different memoir that told the story of one woman's passion in tango. I did not know anything about tango or Buenos Aires and this book provided interesting details and sometimes, the book read like a travelogue. In addition, the author wrote about the people she met, the culture as well as the country's passion in tango dancing. However, half way through the book I was a bit bored with her constant change of tango dancers and she basically repeated the same activities daily. Still a rather entertaining read.

Book Review: insight into the world of tango 'tristesse'
Summary: 3 Stars

as a faithful milonguera, i bought this book hoping to get more insight into the life of tango dancing at buenos aires~where i dream to visit and dance the tango. hence, i found that her book is too detailed on her sexual adventures and not enough on tango dancing. having said that, the important theme that i felt through her book (which is quite relevant in tango dancing) is that it can be a lonely world...the world of tango dancing. we are always looking for the 'perfect' partner and it is hard to seperate the art of dancing from the art of love and desire when you dance so close to someone in their arms. i think that one can go so far in tango dancing and then have complete burn-out or have found bliss by having found the perfect partner in dancing and for life meaning love and possibly marriage. it makes me realize how tango can be a great asset to your life but not all ~ there also needs a balance to tango dancing through a deep, loving relationship and possiblely having kids.

Book Review: Too seamy for me
Summary: 3 Stars

The book gives a fascinating "inside story" about the Tango in Buenos Aires but the writer didn't need to dwell so much on the sexy escapades she experienced.
